Colonial mentality is so prevalent in our society that we've bee conditioned to put a premium on fairer skin. I don't get the point why some Filipina's want to bleach themselves and why skin whitening products is on high sales. Our complexion is our identity and this makes unique. I simply believe dark is beautiful, what you think?

I think your right. Fair skinned people are at out sunbathing every day risking skin cancer to darken their skin and dark skinned people are wasting money trying to lighten theirs! Why can't every one accept themselves for the unique individuals that they are and stop try to blend in with someone else's idea of beauty?

Too true. Everyone wants to be what they aren't. I for one am fine with being pale. And when I say pale, I mean whiter than white. I would stand out in a crowd I'm so pale. lol

I'm an American and I'm white. But when I heard about the fact that a person could actually purchase products to dye their skin lighter, I was appalled. How can someone actually want to do that? Every race has their own beauty. I think Filipino people are lovely. I had a teacher who was Filipino. She had the most beautiful brown eyes, sleek black hair, and lovely olive toned skin.

It happened a long time ago. Somehow that thinking is still present, but there are some who doesn't look shameful on being brown skinned.

The thinking that white girls are prettier has been imparted in our consciousness since we were colonized for so many years by mestiza's and since the colonizers are superior they made the standard that pretty means white.

Dark is beautiful, light is beautiful, everything in-between is beautiful. You should just be proud of who you are. I've never put a premium on fairer skin, nor have I ever thought of myself as superior in any way! That is probably because I have never judged anyone by the color of their skin or the way they speak, or their education level, etc. I like or dislike people based on WHO they are, not WHAT they are! I tend to like everyone unless or until they give me a reason not to. I used to tell my son's friends, when I would first meet them, "These are the rules of this house. I will trust you until you give me a reason not to." They almost always behaved very well in my home. If you give people a chance, no matter what they look like, they will almost always prove themselves worthy of respect. It's the people who refuse to like someone because of their color, nationality or religion that I can't stand. We are a world in crisis right now and we all have to help one another and not see skin color or religion or nationality. There is no room for prejudice or bigotry in our society today. It hurts me very badly to know that prejudice is alive and kicking. But, back to your topic, WHO you are is what makes you unique, not WHAT you are. You are a human being with individual talents and skills. That is what you should be proud of. No one should ever try to "change" their skin color, or accents, or anything else to suit anyone else.

hello there adoremay, I've read some article here in my country and it said that according to a survey, women here believe that the best defining feature of a beautiful person is her fairness. I guess the reason why most girls would want to be fair is because being fair is always seen as being pretty but I personally think that skin colour does not matter as long as your face is pretty.

I totally agree with you. I have had darker skin all of my life. If I stay out in the sun, I will get almost black. In 1964 I was detained at the Mexican border trying to come back to the U.S. because the border guard would believe I was American. In 1987 I lived in an apartment complex with a pool, and I spent a lot of time there. There was also a black girl there who was more of a dark brown. We made a bet who woiuld be darker at the end of summer...I won.

Well i think just like the people who have light skin tone they are also dreaming to have a darker tone themselves. I guess in our case its the opposite, WE have darker skin tones and we like our skin to be lighter like our Caucasians have. I think this mentality is really but normal for every color that we tend to favor the color that we don't possess.

To appreciate what was given. It will reflect in the physical appearance if you have a thankful attitude, and that is what you called charisma. Not all pretty girls have this, they are pretty but have no charms.

Hi there Adore May. I believe the beauty comes from inside out, and the color skin doesn't matter. I am saying it comes from inside, as the actions one persons take, reflects their beauty in my eye, not only the physical aspect only - if a person is really bad, it doesn't matter he / she has a hot body, i might end up thinking she's not that sexy to begin with - maybe this is just me, but that's how i see things. I know some nun sisters that are at the children nursing facility near my girlfriend's parents house, and some are black colored (one from Madagascar) and they are quite beautiful, even if they are not too young and so, as they have a heart of gold.

Dark doesn't reflect the light and that cab't exposed people wants to expose itself so for that it needs to be white and uses the products to make whiten . In my openion we need to maintain our natural skin no artificial

We are now the modern Filipina who wants to have a fairer skin. We can choose from whitening soap, lotion and the capsules as well to have a fairer skin. It depend also on the budget we have to get the expensive one or the cheaper one. But my question is this, which is or what is more effective, the cheaper one or the expensive one?

I think that dark skin is beautiful. Why would you want to change the color of your skin anyway? I mean, you were born with it in the first place and it defines who you are. Why would you want to change that?

Same here....I don't understand too. Yeah, right, they buy whitening pills, whitening injections, whitening creams, soaps, etc, etc. and you know who buy these? The already fair complexioned ladies who want to become fairer, we, brown-complexioned ones remain contented with our colors.

I also do not understand this... when i was working abroad... a lot of americans would ask me where i got my tan... because most of them would really love to have brown skin... that is why they spend alot of time under the sun... just to get that perfect tan... and they thought my skin color was like the perfect tan... i don't bother with skin whitening products... i am perfectly happy with my own skin color...

Black is beautiful, I strongly agree with it. However, due to our colonial past which Filipino perceived foreigner as supreme race than ours some were hardly trying to resemble their selves to foreign race. This is probably the reasons why many of us wanted to be skin-white. But I wonder that Filipino is not trying to copy the African race. In addition to our colonial mind, mass media contributes much to the shaping of our selves. TV shows are highly commercial of different products which are made abroad such as whitening soap. If whitening soap are really effective, why it did nor make sales in African soil? Black skin is very beautiful and its pigment serve as protection from ultra violate causing cancer. Our people needs cultural change. We should not look upon to foreign things in order for us to achieve progress.

we need stop patronizing others. The country has lots of things to be proud of! And that takes place by appreciating the self, the color for one.
• Philippines
7 Jul 08
It's a matter of personal preference. Why do you bother? You should be bothered if they keep on buying these whitening stuffs but won't have an effect on them. Besides, may of them turned fairer, right? and Filipino women don't bleach. They just use whitening lotions. Bleaching has a bad effect esp to the body hairs. Even Nigerians buy whitening products! But are those effective on them? And why buzz over Filipino women wanting to lighten their skins when most white Americans get themselves tanned? It's a matter of personal preference. If they don't like their complexion, why buzz over it for them?

Everybody is free of choice. The color really does not give so much emphasis on how attractive a person can be. White, brown or black, I think everybody is beautiful in their own right. Instead of patronizing whitening products, I just hope that they will realized that achieving a fairer skin will not give a complete happiness, they should engage in things that will make their life worth living. I just think black is beautiful, it does not give a conclusion that whites are ugly. I think everybody is beautiful! It by being true to our self, that is essential, the more we don't like ourself (color, nose, hair and other material things) the more we are not contented with our features, the more we will never learn to appreciate the beauty of life itself because appreciating life starts with appreciating the self.. By appreciating what was given gives us contentment and happiness.
