Why does it have to be so hard to get disability

Most people in both Canada and the USA, tell me about their problems with getting disability. I have heard stories of people with cancer that have been refused. Why does it have to be that hard? The people that need the money the most are not getting it.

My niece was just turned down for S.S.I the other day she was trying to get it for having a few things wrong with her. One of them being Bi-polar. I have tried to ge tmy husband who does have cancer to try to sign up but he won't. To him it is to much trouble. I am just thinking of the medical cost when he gets to where he won't be able to live a normal life like he does now. Well tries to live a normal life.

I think the problem is that the government in both countries want to keep the fakes out, and only give it to the legit cases. Sadly the fakes have all outsmarted the government, making it harder for legit cases to get what they want. It really stinks how one bad apple ruins many barrels.

I guess people need to form an organization and flock in front of their office to let them see how bad the condition of these people...I don't know how their mind is working about it..People pay for that and if they refuse to give it to the right person, what are they going to do with the money? spend it to the other projects and just ignore those who really need it!

it is easy to say people need to form an organization, what people? many of the sick can't even get out of bed let alone do the hard work needed to change laws.

I understand but maybe I am just used to our Country where families and relatives and one particular organization whom these people can approach will do it for them!

Winterose, it just doesn't make sense. I've had cancer nine times, but my oncologists explained to me that cancer isn't considered a disability because you either get better or die. Isn't that pretty much the case with any illness? I only missed work during sugery, and I insisted on chemo and radiation being done after work and on weekends because I had to have an income. I actually found that being so involved with my work kept my mind off how lousy I felt, so I think it helped me heal. My students always know that, if I take off running, I have to get to the ladies' room to barf! Unfortunately, I have several other very serious illnesses, so I still have to go to doctors after work every day. =( That's why I keep lookig for ways to make money online. In addition to feeling lousy, the copayments ar well over $20,000 every year, so I'm always broke!

oh my god that is absolutely awful, that is just not right. Big Chances have to be made to these policies.

Even my doctors tell me the American medical system is badly broken. My copayments are so high, there are times I have to use up anything I can find in the cupboards because I have no money for food. That's insane for a person with several postgraduate degrees and more than forty years in the classroom. If our leaders don't fix these things before long, I wouldn't be surprised to see another American Revolution!

I know in the States here it is very difficult now to get, I am sure many of our homeless here are people who should be on disability. It seems to me the world has gone backwards, instead of us becoming more compassionate we seem to have become hard, and uncaring. We can only hope the future will be brighter and more hopefuly with the election this fall. Although truthfully I doubt it will make much difference no matter who we elect.

I agree. I hear horror stories all the time and then I also hear stories about people on it that shouldn't be. I guess this whole system and department needs a good cleaning out!

I do not know. I think they have to come to your house or apartment and see you in a wheelchair or bed ridden and then they would not believe you. They would probably pull you off the wheelchair or the bed and say, "you can move, you do not have a disability." Maybe they think you did it yourself, and should be punished. Maybe it is because they do not want to spend the money and just want fancy chairs for their offices. Maybe you forgot to read the disclaimer that disqualifies people who have brown hair, and drove cars or whatever disclaimer that would disqualify all but a few. Sometimes it seems better rather than buy a medical health insurance policy, to put your own money aside, but that does not work. There is too much greed and the money you put in the medical insurance policy is yours, is it not?

some people like me do not have money for insurance, we don;t even have enough money for food. If I could work right now I would be out there working I would not wish this life on my worst enemy

My guess is because there have been some people trying to scam the system. But it shouldn't be so hard that the honest people that Really need the help can get it.

Hi Winterose, it is also like it here in the UK too. The people that really need help and assistance just aren't getting it and then there are others that have no real need and get it handed to them on a plate. I get so frustrated myself over this one. I have seen people that are 24/7 carers of somebody that couldn't do anything for themselves not be given a carers allowance to a neighbour the other side whose husband is antisocial be given full disability allowance for him while the genuine situation a few doors down gets nothing. Also the housebound and really ill find these forms etc difficult to fill in, getting them also to where they need to go, and are the ones that really need help but lose out. I really don't know what the answer is though. I just feel for these people. Ellie :D

It makes no sense. I applied for disability here in the US over 5 years ago. What irritates me, is that although Social Security Disability is a national program, the cases are not treated the same everywhere. For instance, with fibromyalgia, judges can have different opinions about whether or not it's a legitimate malady. I've been told that if I had stayed in Texas, my case would have been approved long ago. It's so unfair. I understand that there are some people who abuse the system. That will always be the case. But, like you, I know people who are truly dying and are not approved either.

here in quebec they do not acknowledge fibromyalgia, and I just cannot work and cannot survive on a welfare cheque, I cannot even make ends meet with the lousy little extra they give me for disability.

You are right Rose, it isn't fair. I put some ideas into your other disability topic so I won't go into it all here again. I know I tried the "attorney route" and he did me no good at all. When I eventually won it was on my own, but with the help of my Senator. Let me know if I can help you in anyway.

It's a sad world, it's like they look down on the ones that needs help. I will never understand why the ones that don't need it, gets help. My husband broke his toe a few years ago, and his national guard unit didn't care unless he had a doctor state that he couldn't run. He has to run 2 miles every year for his physical readiness test. After seeing 5 doctors, and paying almost 600 dollars, he finally is able to walk his 2 mile run. Most of the 600 dollars is for a liner that was made for his feet, just so he could walk without pain. Reason it took 5 doctors, the paperwork from the first 2 doctors somehow got lost. This system needs to be looked over. The ones that don't need it, needs to be removed, and the ones that do deserve it, needs to be put on it.

I have a cousin who has had arthritis real bad for years and years. Her hands and elbow's have been messed up from it for almost as long as I can remember. She has worked since she was maybe 15 yrs old and later on in life tried to get disability because of her hands, the doctor's even said she could no longer work. It took her years of her and her doctor fighting for her to get it. I agree with you about those who need it can't get it or have to fight and fight for it and they aren't able to fight.
