Is a job posting for $8 per hour REQUIRING a degree fair?

I was in the welfare office about a month ago, to ask for directions to the Social Security Office. While in there, I decided to look at postings on the bulletin board for job openings. The jobs I saw were $8 per hour and required you to have a degree. Now, my argument about this wasn't that we should be entitled to make tons of money after earning a degree, but that it really SHOULDN'T be required to have a degree to make only $.75 more per hour than the minimum wage here in Pennsylvania. To me, that's a waste. They are basically saying "hey, you have to spend $10,000 per year in order to make barely anything." Who else feels this is wrong? Who feels this is okay? Who feels that this may be the reason there are so many people on welfare?

No I do not think it's fair. I'm spending almost $20,000 a year for a piece of paper that will allow me to work in child care centers and I'll barely be making a large amount of money per hour myself. I think it's insane actually that I'll be paying back more in student loans than I'll be making a year in some cases. I guess it depends on where I actually manage to find a job when I graduate, if I ever get a chance to find a job. I just don't think it's fair we pay so much money and actually go to school and never really get rewarded for it.

I think the big issue with kids not wanting to go to college now is they have to spend 4 years or more in school, rack up thousands in student loans when they could get better paying jobs in some cases without going to school. The government pushes education on us but we really don't get anything good in return. I know some people that have degrees that can barely get buy on their income and it's just not fair. Our professionals aren't being treated like professionals.

I've had this discussion with friends before, and they told me that it's not anyone's problem but mine if I spend that much on school and then can't get a decent job. But the thing is, I was always told I can choose the school that is right for me...so why should I have to sacrifice by having a school that isn't right for me just so I can afford it in the end? I think the value of education is diminishing in both the financial and personal aspect.

It disturbs me that people CAN pay $8/hour for a college grad, but if they can't fill the position, they will raise the salary. Ultimately somebody out there will work for that pay (and meet the qualifications) so it probably won't change. And depending on what your career goals are, taking a huge paycut may be worth it to gain relevant experience. :-)

You have hit the nail on the head! I agree. I'm sure the job they were offering wasn't for brain surgery. It's hard enough these days to find a good job that will pay the bills. But to pay someone $8 per hour and they need a degree for that amount of money is absurd. Something is really wrong. It certainly is proof that when the cost of living goes up paycheck do not!. Good for you to write about this. I hope other do too. No wonder the people of Denmark are the happiest in the world. We should be so lucky. I believe in working hard for your money but this is ridiculous!

Well, there is a fine line between "working hard" and "almost slavery" you know?

Yes,this is why it is ridiculous. It is slave labor. For someone to spend four plus years....well I know what you mean. It is crazy!

I don't believe that is the reason why a lot of people are on welfare. You have a lot of lazy people who are on welfare. You have people who are physically incapable of working. You have all different reasons why there are so many people on Welfare but to require that a person have a degree for $8.00 an hour is ridiculous. I mean, really!!

This is true also! There are so many lazy people on welfare. I personally know two people who had a baby just so they could GET welfare! It makes me gag!
