Grandparents used to say don't look in the mirror. Why did they say that?

I think the superstition played the fore in the saying. Everyone has the devil in them, some undesirable character. Dont look in the mirror, you might have yourself for nothing. The devil is not in the mirror, the devil is with you. The point is you MIGHT see the devil.

I do not recommend to anybody that they stare in the mirror for a long time. You can only smile at yourself for so long, then you slip from a neutral into an uncertain state, especially when you become detached and forget that it is your own eyes observing you... Humans can sense when they are being watched by other humans. Being watched by yourself can also be uncomfortable and you can frighten yourself!

A criticism of vanity?

Yep! that's the way my grandmother would have looked at it. Strange that a lady who came from a good looking family would say to her children not to overdo looking in the mirror ... but I think the second reason is that you are not meant to spend too long staring at yourself in the mirror. If you've tried it you'll know what I mean. All the best!

mirror has a lot of significance and I agree with posting of mmiller. Moreover it is said that mirror should not face the bed of husband and wife as it leads to fight and dicotent between the couple. I dont know what is truth or what is lie, all i understand is that there is no harm in doing something which people has developed over time

Yes I agree with you that some superstitions are probably put there by our ancestors for good reasons and it costs us nothing to follow them today.... Thanks for the superstition about the mirror not facing the bed... What country is that from???
