What is your option to 'upgrade' or 'buy referrals'?

Lately I have joined few ptcs and am undecided whether to buy referrals or to upgrade. Both ways give me choices of good earnings and faster payout. I am at a crossroad. Which do you think is worth, buy referrals or upgrade? those of you who have ptcs,do you make better income if you were to upgrade?
