Sand crab - He's a big one!

We went to the Outer Banks in North Carolina last weekend with my friend and had a great time. The first day we were out on the beach, this "sand" crab was running around by us. I really hesitate to call it a sand crab because I've never seen them this big before! Where I come from, we'd call this a #2, which is a medium sized one for eating! I thought he was really cute and took a ton of pictures of him. This one is a close-up for the detail, but he was pretty big! I moved my feet out of the way pretty quickly when he ran by because I'm sure he wouldn't have let go of my toe if he had gotten ahold of it!

I would love to have been there. I have never seen a big sand crab before. I have seen ones the size of your finger nail.

Big sand crab - You can see my friends hand with the crab in it's hole. Although it's in there tight, it gives you a bit of perspective on it's size.
I am used to the sand crabs that fit in the palm of your hand, so these really freaked me out at first. My husband calls them "ghost" crabs which I've never heard of before...

I've lived by the ocean most of my life, and around crabs too! Sometimes my husband makes up things and thinks that's what they are... Other people that he's said "ghost crabs" to have looked at him kinda strange!

Hehe glad you enjoyed your trip. He is a nice crab to be sure. Did you guys happen to catch any of them for supper? They look so awkward when you see them but they are very fast! They also dig into the sand fast as well! I would love to go back to the Outer Banks again. I have not been since 07.

That was my first trip to the Outer Banks - and probably my last... My friend bought a beach house where she used to own one so now we'll go there in the summer!!! I have never eaten sand crabs, but I love blue crabs!

Sounds like fun. I have never seen crabs up close and personal. I am in the middle of Kansas. I have been to the East Coast, and the West Coast. The thing I came closest to is a jelly fish, and I know that would hurt.

I was pretty much raised in the Atlantic Ocean (and will see the Pacific Ocean for the first time next month). I remember when my dad went crabbin' when we were little and he'd bring home bushells of crabs to steam. Some of them would "get loose" when he was putting them in the pot and they'd run around snappin' out our toes. That was a blast!!! I'm sure we musta gotten snapped a few times but I don't remember. And, yeah, jelly fish sting really bad - even the little ones!

It's awesome, my buddy and I talked about it and he had seen on discover channel where this dude goes all over the planet looking to eat practically anything their heritage eat. So my buddy talked about eating sand crab. I thought it would be so cool to try it and made it our goal to do it the next day. We were all excited and broght our gear and we will have a grill sand crab cook out over the fire pit. Here is what happend afterward see my site below. http://207.126.48.115/sand/index.html

That's pretty cool!!! Your crabs look a bit different than ours though... I've never eaten sand crabs, but I've eaten regular hard-shell crabs.
