is being an opportunist wrong?

Not necessarily. If you take advantage of an opportunity that doesn't hurt someone in the process there is nothing wrong with that. If you manipulate a situation in your favor and no one gets hurt there is nothing wrong with that. The only time being an opportunist is wrong is when it's done on the back of someone else or if someone else gets hurt somehow by it.
