3D max is a very good tool but if you want something free and open source then try Blender at http://www.blender.org/ they have been around for quite some time now and have a lot supports, they have a gallery to see the quality it is capable off. Check this out http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/gallery/art-gallery/

its better to understand first the characteristic the software that you are dealing with before you go the the application...

3d Studio max is the best software. It will cost you about 3000 Bucks.If you don't have the money try other ways...

I'd say try maya, but then it's too complicated. Maybe 3dmaxstudio will do. Anyways good luck with your endeavor.
