What would you do if a hurricane or tornado came your way?

Would you stay to make sure your home would be okay or would you leave town? I live in a townhouse with no basement so I would leave town. :-)

I must admit that the thought of such an experience intrigues me as well. Nevertheless, I would not choose to have the experience if the choice existed since you can never predict the outcome. There is little point in unless you live to talk about it.

You are one brave soul to want to go out into a hurricane to see what it is like. Be careful because things will be flying around.

I have been through both hurricanes and tornoadoes, and I have to say that I would stay. The apartment building in which I have lived in for a little over 4 years now was built before the new building codes came in and this building has been here since the 1940s. It was used as an old army dorm for WWII, so I trust that it has been through some bad storms. Last year, I went through 2 hurricanes, Katrina and Wilma. During the first part of Katrina, we stood outside on the front porch, hanging out with our neighbors and partying it up. After the eye came through, we all went inside and just sat and talked. During Wilma, we just stayed inside and hung out during the whole storm. We left the back door open to get the air that was blowing to come in since it felt cool and nice. We also got to see the storm moving through. It was very windy and rainy, and it was quite interesting. The only thing that I hated about it is that we didn't have any electricity for about 3 weeks, and this put a damper on my studies with school. When my mother was pregnant with me and my sister, she worked at social security office in Xenia, Ohio. She was in one of the worst tornadoes that have ever hit there. I believe that it was an F5 storm. Her boss told them to get under their desks, but no one listened to him and went outside. They all climbed on top of my mother until it was gone. So, I literally was in a tornado via mother's womb. I have also been through dust storms out in Arizona that were pretty bad, and other tornadoes that we had in Ohio that weren't as bad as the one from 1974.

You are definitely very brave to stay and go through the hurricanes and tornados. I am glad you and your friends did not get hurt at all. If I had a basement in my townhouse, I would stay as well during a tornado but maybe not a hurricane since I am in a low lying area and flooding could be a problem.

I have never been in a hurricane but I know I would board up the windows and doors and leave town. I have been in several tornadoes as I lived in Tornado Alley growing up. If I had access to a basement I would go there. If not, I would go to the bathroom and get in the tub with a matress laying over me to protect me from flying debris. I lived across the street from a professor of meterology so most of the time we would stand outside watching the skies and when he said it was time to go in we would run for the basement.

Yes, I would do the exact same thing. Make sure my property was protected and get the heck out of there. :-) I have been through tornado warnings but never been in one. My best friend worked near a building that got damaged by a tornado last year. The basement is a good place to go.

Some people have homes where it definitely is not safe to stay, even if it boarded up and stuff. Safest best is to get away if possible.

I stayed home during Hurricane Rita last year, and I will never do it again if I can help it. We were without electricity for about a month, but at least it wasn't cold at the time. I live in a mobile home, but thankfully it wasn't damaged much. Where Katrina gave out water damage, Rita gave out wind damage, so there wasn't much flooding anywhere around where I live in S.E. Texas.

I was living in a mobile home I would have taken off. It is even unsafer to stay in a mobile home during a hurricane since it is easier to lift off the ground than a regular home that is planted in the ground. IT had to be difficult not having electricity.

Been in both and I've stayed. Now whenI was up in Michigan we had a basement which helped with all the tornadoes but once I moved to Florida a basement was a thing of the past. I've had a few hurricanes come near us, not hit directly thankfully, but still enough to do damage. I'd prefer to stay. Where would I go anyways? Two miles from me to a school where I'm shut in with tons of other people with nothing to do? I'd rather stay at home and keep the house safe and make sure my pets are ok.

Having a basement would definitely make a choice somewhat easier whether to stay or go through a tornado. I do not have one so I would have to leave. Florida does get a lot of hurricanes so I would find a nearby shelter that is safer and stronger. I can not imagine why people in mobile homes would stay since those are not safe at all.

If it was too dangerous for me to stay, I would leave to make sure the chances of me living longer would be better. I guess it depends on the situation the person is in. Thank you for your reply. :-)

I've experienced both. I grew up in Louisiana (hurricanes) and lived in Oklahoma later in life (tornadoes). With hurricanes I would leave town, without a doubt. For tornadoes there is no time to leave. I would have the safest place mapped out ahead of time and go there.

Coming from a country where there's no natural disaster...except for the tsunami 2 years ago, it's very hard to answer that...but i'm scared of any natural disaster, i don't think i will want to stay at home and wait for the time to die....or to be ok...i think i will leave town to a safer area.

Well, I can say that I have been through hurricanes. I lived in Florida the year the state was hit with 4 in one season. It was mind boggling that when we were trying to dust ourselves off after one, we learned there was another brewing in the ocean and headed our way! We stayed in our home though. We were far enough from the beach that we did not fear the waves and flooding. But my sister lived 10 minutes from the beach. So, she drove up to Orlando to get in the middle of the state for the hurricane ride. So...I guess the answer is that I would stay at my home. I have never been through a tornado though. But we already have the plan of stuffing the kids in the closet that is below the stairs to keep them safe should we have to face a tornado here in tornado alley.

Where I live we are prone to getting tornadoes so we have a storm shelter built that is stocked with emergency supplies if ever we need to use it. I haven't been through an actual hurricane, but have gotten hurricane force winds through here which did cause a lot of damage and tipped over a lot of mobile homes. I would never stay inside mine for that reason. So whenever we go under a severe thunderstorm warning I gather up my animals and go directly to the storm shelter and spend the night in there. I know it sounds like I am paranoid of storms, but my motto "it's better to be safe than sorry later".

I would leave in case of a hurricane.....with that much warning time there is no reason to stay. You just never know how bad it's going to get. Now with a tornado.....you don't always get a lot of warning.I've been through several and on one we were actually in Menards(home improvement store). They were telling people to meet in the middle of the store.....we got out of there in a hurry....it just didn't seem save to stay inside with all the things that could be flying through the air if it was a direct hit.I spent many times in the bath tub with pillows and blankets because we didn't have a basement. It's never a good idea to try to out run a tornado.....seeking shelter below ground or in the bath tub are your best options. Hopefully someday they will be able to predict when and where a tornado will hit.....maybe then you would be able to get out of harms way.

This may seem a stupid answer, but I would remain where I am. It has been shown during the vast number of such drastic weather conditions that the route and destination cannot be predicted. How often has a hurricane suddenly changed direction and caused havoc in places that were feeling perfectly safe only hours before? I would certainly try to make any defense that was available and no matter how desperate it seemed to be, but I see no point in leaving my home since I could not be sure that I was not moving to where the storm would decide to hit.

I live in Europe, fortunately we haven´t had hurricanes or tornadoes here. If there was one of these two coming my way, I wouldn´t worry about the house. I´d just grab the most important things like money, imortant documents and get out of there as fast as I could.

My hometown never has hurricane or tornado, but if it happened, I would follow the advice of government, or stay in the basement to make sure my safety.I would not leave my home.

It's according to how bad the storm is,if it was a small hurrucane or twister,I would stay as our apartment complex was built pretty tough but if it was a hurricane or twister with very high winds,I would take my dad and animals tomy brother's house as his house is new and was built to withstand winds of 150 mph.

If a tornado came my way I would move to a friend's house having a basement and then enjoy a few days with him away from my hectic schedule.

I would go to our basement and stay there until the danger is gone. Luckily, however, tornadoes do not pass by where I live.
