Does anyone out there play guitar? If so, what helped you the most in learning how to play? Did you take lessons or did you just teach yourself.

I used an online course to teach myself. Try looking at http://www.reviewsnest.com/GuitarLessons/index.htm . They review several courses and give their opinions on what's good (the only give opinions and don't sell - you'll have to buy the courses elsewhere). The course I bought - LMG - is very effective, and very much like they said it is.

I don't play guitar, when I was young I played the bass in a local Punk band. I took lessons and then I went on alone studying on books and scores. My son is 7 and the last year he started to go to music lessons of piano and so me too I'm starting learning piano. The next year my son will have to choose another instrument, he told me he'd like learning playing the guitar.... we'll se....

Most of it was self-taught. The only help I got was a book - more like a booklet because it was only a few pages - in which I learned the musical scales & chords. Once I learned, I was doing pretty good. After that, it was with another guitarist that really improved my playing & coordination.

A friend of mine plays the guitar and he took a few classes to learn scales and some basic chords, but for the most part he is self taught. And he is very good I might add.

i learnt to play the guitar on my own but that's cause i knew the keys. its anyway easy if you start with scales and exercises and gradually progress to chords. scales and exercises help build finger strength which will help you in chord playing! have fun!

Everybody here has some good answers, and they are all necessary in helping you learn! But you know, the best quality learning that I have received is watching other guitar players' techniques, whether it be on TV, at concerts, in clubs or bars, church, or just anywhere a guitar player is playing, even in person! I would have to say, this is where I have learned a lot of techniques, you don't usually run into! Even now, after playing over 30 yrs, on guitar, I still see a guitar player that has some techniques, I haven't learned yet!

i have 23 guitars, 2 violins, 2 keyboards, 2 fyfes, harmonicas, a garry grace snare. i am able to make sounds on all of them. never took a lesson for guitar, but sat in on a few jamm sessions. mostly i play by ear, but i did learn the violin b w o instruction. i would have had 37 guitars but i gave a few away last christmas to kids who wanted but couldn't afford one
