When You Wake Up At Night, Do You Ever Have Trouble Going Back To Sleep?

United States
August 4, 2008 7:57pm CST
This is a bad problem for me. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I sometimes have trouble going back to sleep. Sometimes, I will wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake for hours - even though I close my eyes. If I do not get a good night of uninterrupted sleep, I will be "off my game" for the next day. So what about you? When you wake up at night, do you ever have trouble going back to sleep? Do you have any "going back to sleep" success stories that you would like to share?

Yes, I have a terrible time sleeping through the night! Some things I do (depending on what wakes me up) include: a) Using the bathroom (#1 reason why I wake up) b) Read (nearly guaranteed to knock me out!) c) Cover up (if I'm cold in the winter, I can't sleep) I will NOT watch TV (it never really works), but I've been known to fall asleep watching TV--one night I was tired, turned the TV off and rolled over and went to sleep instantly...turns out that when I woke a few hours later (bathroom), I never turned it off! I got a better night's sleep though because of the light sound in the background. I've got to get a noise machine! Good luck finding a way to sleep through the night!

Well, I actually don't drink anything after 8 pm, and I make sure that I use the bathroom beforehand; it actually has to do with the fact that my MS (multiple sclerosis) is progressing. At least I'm waking up! As for the noise machine, the home I'm staying in just makes some odd noises is all; it's MUCH quieter than my own (not on the corner of a busy street!). Thanks!

Diseases and ailments can certainly take their toll on our bodies, and one of the effects may be the loss of a good night's sleep. I suppose that bringing the issue up with a doctor only gets the response: "Keep doing what your doing." Which is frustrating, but as you say - at least you are still waking up! That's a good perspective to take. Best wishes!

You remind me of my children. We always make sure not to give them too much liquid before they go to bed, otherwise they will need to get up in the middle of the night... And, we do have sound machines for them, to help them sleep through whatever noisy happenings may continue to go on in the world around them after their bed time. Thanks for your reply!

No. I hardly ever wake up in the middle of the night, but when I do I never have any trouble falling right back to sleep. What I have a problem with is waking back up after I take a nap. Sleeping I can do. Sleeping's easy. It's the awake part that's difficult. but, hey, that's what caffeine's for. Yay for mountain dew! Oh yeah, sleep, kinda got of the subject there. I don't have any going to sleep success stories, I do have a lot of walking in the dark accident stories though. One time I was walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Usually we just keep the bathroom door completely open, but this night it was only open half way for some reason. Anyway, I didn't know that and so I just walked right into it, not into the front of the door, but the side of it. It met perfectly with my nose. Ouch. It hurts just thinking about it.

LOL - you have "not waking up" problems! And then you have sleep walking problems? I suppose that a good night of sleep walking does not make for very restful sleep... I also have problems taking naps. I fear that my naps often interfere with getting a good night's sleep! Getting the most hours of sleep in a row seems to be the best way for me. Thanks for your reply! (And keep that bathroom door open before you go to bed...)

usually when I wake up at night I am up for the rest of it, or at least several hours. I have a real hard time getting to sleep and if I am woke up it seems if I have been asleep several hours then can't just lay down and go back to sleep. Some nights I dont' get but a couple hours and then the next day I am worn out. Not alert for anything. i have some doxepen but hate to take it. I am here alone and don't want to be clear out in case of fire or some one trying to break in, but then I got a loud dog so probably would get up just to shut him up.

It would be nice to have a way of being able to simply fall back asleep... Yours sounds like a very tough situation. It's good that you have the dog, though! Thanks for your reply!

I never have problems going back to sleep if I get up in the night sometimes. But I have to get up in the first place. I'm a deep sleeper and i do not have trouble finding sleep, even in the most unsuitable conditions. It's the way my body has been tuned and I like it because it makes me more flexible than others because I can adjust to any situation, rather than complain and grieve and then go without sleep and be restless for the day. I do not have trouble sleeping no matter what, so Even if I get up late in the night, then I just have to lie back again to go back in my dreamland. Although this habit has caused a very bad thing for ... I do not wake up for Alarm sounds as well.. bourne

So you have the opposite problem and need a louder alarm! (LOL) I seem to alternate. Sometimes I sleep very deeply so that nothing wakes me up. Other times, slight sounds will wake me up, and I have a terrible time trying to go back to sleep. I am sure that it is a combination of diet and exercise, plus anything that may be going on in life. Thanks for your reply!

Not really, most of the time I'd fall right back to sleep. The few occasions when I couldn't, was because of some sort of anxiety about the next morning - presentations, meetings, so forth. So I'd try not to let these emotions get hold of me - I'd either read a book or watch TV, till I'm tired. So far, it has worked for me!

I think that one of the things that can easily keep a person awake is if they allow their mind to start thinking... Anything that can be done to keep thoughts from entering the mind can help to allow yourself to go back to sleep... Thanks for your reply!

Such problem sometimes happens on me,it is really hard to find a method suitable for everybody who have this problem, but I think we can try to resolve it gradually by bringing up good habit such as: 1. keep good state of mind(mentality); 2.insist on exercise as running, swimming, playing basketball etc.; 3. ensure a fixed work and rest time particularly the time for going to bed and getting up; 4. drink a cup of milk or have an apple one hour before going to bed; 5. Do not drink too much water or any other drinks one hour before going to bed. Best wishes for all those who have such troubles!

You have many good suggestions. I would guess that many sleeping problems could be avoided by doing what you say. My only additions are: 6. Avoid caffeine too close to bedtime. 7. Avoid spicy food too close to bedtime. Thanks for your reply!

i don't really have problems going back to sleep. there are times i get to wake up in the middle of my sleep but i can easily sleep again. i don't know why. maybe, i just love sleeping. but when i wake up at night due to a very bad, scary dream, that's when i find it difficult to go back to sleep. i am scared that i might dream the same dream again.

I think that the bad dream problem happens to a lot of people. Who wants to go back to sleep and continue a bad dream? And (LOL), if you ever wake up in the middle of a good dream, you can never go back to sleep and continue having that one! Thanks for your reply!

When I am not in good health,It might be hard for me to return to sleep again once I have waken up,or sometimes I felt scared (when I was a child),and it would also be different to go back to sleep, but now, those rarely happen in my daily life, since I am an adult now and also have come up with my own way of going back to sleep: I will try to envision some fancy and amazing pictures, such as being successful in future and having a peaceful but exiciting family, which of course is also what I seek up all my life,.and actually it helps me in sleeping.nevertheless, the prerequisite is that you should be in good condition, probably by taking more exercises.anyway, sleep have much to do with your health.Of course,if your lacking of sleep derives from the pressure you undertake, perhaps more spare time is required to relax mentally.

In other words, you start dreaming *before* you go back to sleep, and this helps you to fall asleep again? Good health definitely helps for good sleep. Poor health makes for terrible sleeping. I agree. Thanks for your reply!

aw... highlyclever, i'm so sorry to hear that. But i dont think i might be able to help since i never had problem with sleeping. Thus, even if i woke up in the middle of the night, i can easily sleep again. But some people have found it effective to 1. make a hot drink (cocoa, milk, etc. Just not coffee :P) 2. turn on the t.v. and sat in front of it. Then let the sound of the t.v. lullaby you. 3. read an immensely boring book/story 4. do tiring things (like doing a simple house chores) in the hope that after being tired it's easier to ask your body to sleep again. 5. light off the bedroom (if you have the light on previously) dearly hope you wont get trouble in getting back to sleep after waking up at night!

I'm glad for you that this is not your problem. The hot drink idea is a good one, although as you say - no coffee! Sugary drinks would probably be another thing to avoid... My wife would like the suggestion for me on a sleepless night to go and do housechores (LOL) ... Thanks for your reply!

hahahha.... yes, i'm sure she will happily ask you to do one housechore or two so that everybody will be happy: you can get back to sleep, and she will have one or two less chores to do in the morning ;) Well, whatever the advice you take, make sure to post about the success when you can easily go back to sleep after waking up in the night! sleep well, highlyclever!!

Hi,highlyclever.I am sorry to hear that.I have no such experience, but one of my friends really have this problem. She always wake up in the middle of the night and hear the sound of others,it is a long time for her to bear that. She once told me how painful she was,so I advised her to take more exercise and drink hot milk before go to bed.And I told her not to think question like “What can I do?If I can not go back to sleep,I will have not enought energy to go to work .”Just close your eyes and think some dreamy thing! To my surprise it really work.I hope it can help you also.

For me, we open our window to have cool fresh air at night. In the early morning hours, the birds chirp. The chirping is pretty - but it wakes me up. So I suppose that the easy solution is to close the window... Other times I may wake up because of a bad dream. Or the children may wake up in the middle of the night and need to be put back to bed. Or who knows? I am thankful for the nights that I sleep the night through... and if I have to take a nap the next day, well, I guess that I do what I have to do! Thanks for your reply!

I used to have that problem a lot. Then I learned I was not drinking enough water before bed, so I was getting dehydrated in the middle of the night. So if I drink before bed I sleep well, and if I do wake up, I drink a little water and then I can fall back asleep!

LOL - Some people have problems because they drink too much water, other people have problems because they do not drink enough! Do you ever feel like you are walking on a tightrope, doing a balancing act? I suppose that you do whatever it takes to be able to go to sleep and get a good night's rest. I'm glad that you were able to figure out what the problem was! Thanks for your reply!

Oh my gosh, yes. It happens to me usually if I had a frightening dream or I need to use the bathroom. Sometimes I wake up for no reason at all! When I can't get back to sleep after thirty minutes, I turn the television on and watch TV for about twenty minutes, or until I start to get drowsy. I hope you have a good night sleep tonight :)

Thanks, you too! Something that I heard somewhere along the line was that looking at bright lights (like a television or a computer monitor) was actually not good for being able to get back to sleep. The number of people, though, that fall asleep watching late night television probably disproves that theory! LOL Thanks for your reply!

Excuse me ,How old are you.I'm 27 .I often wake up in the night for leaking, but I try to think nothing when I wake up.I just keep my dreamly contidition and go to bed soonest after pee. If I have something,I tried to avoid thinking it.I imagine "Nothing" and to spell it in mind. Then I can go back to sleep very soon. You can have a try.

I am a little older than you are. I do not usually have the same problem. When I do wake up, I usually keep the room dark - as bright lights are likely to wake me up more. Keeping an empty mind is a good way to let the mind fall back to sleep. Thanks for your reply!

hi highlyclever! I can absolutely relate to your problem. In fact, I wasn't able to have a good night's sleep last night. I slept at 9pm and woke up about 1am. I don't know why I woke up. Probably I'm just too bombarded with problems that bother me and eventually affected my sleeping habits. You know what I did? I just walked back and forth inside my room, made me feel like a ghost floating. lolz. When I laid in bed at around 4am, I was able to go back to sleep. Although I was able to go back to sleep, it still affected my disposition today.

Hi eiram25, When my sleep is interrupted in the middle of the night, I never quite feel rested the next day. I think that I need a good solid six hours at least of straight sleeping in order to feel refreshed for the next day. Thinking about problems is definitely one way to keep oneself from going back to sleep! Sorry to hear about your rough night and hope that tonight is better for you!

I have a really hard time sleeping. If I don't take a sleeping pill at night, I won't be able to sleep hardly at all. I could sleep for a little while, then I will wake up and toss and turn. I work a few night shifts and when I get home the next morning, I have a hard time going to sleep. I usually only sleep a couple hours then I'm up for the day. Night shift has nothing to do with the way I sleep. I was like that before I ever started working nights. Sorry that I don't have any success stories to tell you. I'm anxious to see what others have to say and their success stories too. :)

The closest I have ever come to taking a sleeping pill is when I am ill and take NyQuil or something along those lines. Trying to sleep during the day is very difficult. You would need to make your bedroom completely dark so as to keep all of the sunlight out... Thanks for your reply!

I don't usually have trouble going back to sleep. My main issue is that I wake up so much in the middle of the night. I usualy on average wake up at least 2-4 times in the middle of the night. It has been this way for a very logn time and proves to be very frustrating and tiring for the next morning!!

I sympathize with your trouble. Do you ever analyze what you do from day to day to see if some days you sleep better (or worse), and what habits during the day might contribute to the nights that you sleep better (or worse)? Thanks for replying to my discussion!

aha...so many response! Congratulations! I can go to sleep again within few minutes if I wake up in the middle of the night. But sometimes I can't. For example, I go to bed with a sad mood or with unsolve big trouble... Maybe you can read something to let yourself tired and then you can go to sleep agian.
