How to get to top discussions & rating?

I have been wondering how to get my discussions in the top discussions of the day. I also have been wondering how i can get better ratings.
I get very less response to my discussions.
Have you got your discussions in "today's top discussions". If so share your experience.
If not tell me what you feel can be done to reach there.

I'm not really sure how to do it. One of my discussions was there before but I really have no clue as to how or why it got there. I have had some really good discussions that got alot of responses to it but someone with less responses got on the list and not me. I'm not sure how to get better ratings other than to make sure to make good discussions and responses and also remind your friends to rate you.
