Many people on My Lot dream about going around the world or just to travel to a foreign country. Let us think of which are the cheapest travel destinations and give any tips for traveling with a low budget. I went to Sumatra, an island in Indonesia. I found local buses were incredibly cheap and accommodation cost very little. I swam in a cool lake, went caving and saw orangutans in the wild. Can you think of a cheap travel destination? If you went there what would activities would you like to do?

Everywhere I have been has been rather pricey, so I'm going to keep an eye on this discussion and make notes!

I am sorry that you have found everywhere pricey. The most expensive places I have been are Norway, Sweden, the Seychelles, the Maldives and French Polynesia. So it looks like Thailand is a cheap destination because it has been suggested by poohgal and squaretile.

I'd love to go to Thailand - I even have in-laws there! As soon as my daughter is a bit older and more sensible I think we'll go. The people are beautiful and it seems to be a fascinating place.

i suggest try to go to Philippines also. you can buy a lot without spending so much money. and besides, Philippines is not that big country so you may be able to see more beautiful spots without worrying the distances. Manila is the capital city. you might love to shop there. 2 hours to north from manila, you will be able to swim on a beaches. if you want to swim while enjoying the island view, go to Pangasinan where the "hundred island be found".. if you want to visit mountainous area, you might want to go to Baguio City, 2 hours away from Pangasinan (not bad).. you won't have to worry about transportation, it's not cheap. you will enjoy the temperature, foods, scenery. if you want going to beaches, that would not be a problem especially in Visayas area. Boracay is the famous beach but actually the are many beautiful beaches you would love to go such as Puerto Galera, Pagudpud.. i have seen lists of beautiful beaches in Philippines on you tube that could help you visualize what i was talking hehe.. check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjNXw175HfA enjoy traveling and hope you get to see Philippines in the future!=o)

Thanks for wonderful description of the Philippines. It is one of the countries at the top of my travel wish list. I love island hopping and snorkeling. The climate would be perfect for me and I like the sound of the cheap transportation. The beaches are really gorgeous with their palm trees, white sand and crystal clear waters. Thanks for the You Tube detail, that looks great. Yes, I will certainly come to the Philippines one day in the future.

Unfortunately, beach cabins, one of my favourite places to stay, are disappearing fast from the scene. They're being replaced by huge resorts which are nice for a stay also, but cannot replace the serenity and relaxation of a beach cabin.

Nothing beats a rustic looking thatched beach hut for $15 dollars a night. A fancy hotel room for $60 is nowhere near as lovely a place to stay. Maybe beach cabins are still available in Thailand and the Philippines, but huge resorts are popping up in many countries. I went to one side of a village in Bulgaria by the national park but the other side of it was ruined by a high story hotel.

Most Asian countries are very cheap by western standards. Anything thet is labour intensive is usually very cheap.

Yes, I would love to see more of Asia one day. Most of all I think that I would love going snorkeling and island hopping in the Philippines. It would be great to do that in Thailand as well. I think both countries have cheap guest houses and beach huts.

I agree with poohgal! from my perspective and from my country location, I would also say that Thailand is the cheapest! i managed to get a decent clean room wtih en suite bathrooms for only US 15 a night! i guess now it might be USD 20 but that's still very cheap. and street food is so cheap. and good. and easily available. so i would say that is why bangkok is one of the most popular tourist destinations for people living in south east asia. china can be cheap too but the standard of food and accommodation is not as good.

Wow! I have to go to Thailand one day soon then. I like the sound of the room prices and the quality. I would enjoy going shopping in Bangkok and get some bargain souvenirs. A lady in Canterbury has a Thai gift shop and the things in there are lovely. I am pleased that you and poohgal suggested Thailand. Thanks.

The cheapest nation I have been to must be Thailand. Food, transportation, shopping and many other things there are really cheap. This explains why many Singaporeans enjoy shopping in Thailand. The most expensive nation I have been to is Japan. Everything is expensive but I still love that country. It's beautiful

I would love to go to Thailand and it must have such an interesting culture. I love stayed in rustic beach huts and visiting tropical islands. I am sure that the temples are interesting to explore. My brother-in-law got an all expenses paid trip to Japan for three months so I was jealous. I would really like to go there but I read a book that said whilst one thousand dollars would buy 67 days travel in India it would only buy 14 days travel in Japan.

Yea. The beaches in Thailand are indeed beautiful. I have not been to Phuket but I've been to Pattaya. Both are beautiful beaches in Thailand.
