Do you work at your writing (article, story or poem) until ..........

When you write an article, story, poem or book, do you keep at it until you have completed it? I don't seem to be able to keep to one subject - I seem to be writing a few pieces at one time. I would start an article on business, then I seem to lose grasp of the ideas or words, then I would move onto another piece of work, say a story or poem. I'll be doing several pieces at one time - the good thing is, sometimes several articles are completed at the same time. What about you? Do you keep at one task, work at it until you have completed, or ....?

Hi, it's good to see something to completion before embarking on the next one...but I'm really ...how shall I describe it - disorganised? Unfocused? I don't seem to be able to concentrate! Maybe I've got to learn to be more disciplined like you! Thanks and happy writing!

I am a one-sitter idea. If I have an idea, i write it down. research for that topic. And get what i really wanted the people to know. I don't rest on my ideas alone. I widen it by incorporating others' ideas. To make it more informative.

As long as you are finishing your projects, it doesn't matter if you concentrate on one at a time or work on all of them at once. If that is what works for you, stick with it. When I was in school, I often had several papers due each semester. Sometimes, when doing the research I would forget which paper I was supposed to be researching. But, often, I found something that I could use in another paper. I just had to remember to record the notes in the right place.

I think I am much like you dear I work on a few topics simultaneously. It takes time though but I am comfortable that way, I guess. And guess what, you end up with 3-4 articles after sometime. It feels good. Happy writing.

Hi Mimpi, what a nice name! What does it mean? Yup, it feels good at the end, when everything has concluded. But the going can sometimes be very demotivating...when I can't see completion to anything! Thanks & happy writing to you too!

well, i write poems too.. i have my own poems, mostly about love, life, emotions and those kinds, and i usually finish it in just one sitting. i even made a poem for my boyfriend for his birthday and i wrote it while i was having my fifteen minute break in the office. but i finished it! i make sure that i finish it immediately and i don't know, when i make poems, i don't run out of ideas. my mind is somewhat stimulated to finish and make the poem creative. i don't like starting a new poem if i have not finish the first one. i always want to finish one full poem before starting a new one, it always fulfilling that way!

I do my best to stay at one task until I finish it. I can never have something that I don't finish. There are times when I am suffering from writer's block, sometimes that's good because it gives me a break from everything and i do write a little extra stuff when I have writer's block, but other times I end up reading.

Hi, I really admire those who can stay focused on one piece until completed. If I would do that, most likely that piece will never be finished. I get mental block very often; so I've to switch to something else. Thanks, and happy writing!

i dont.. on some projects if i did that i would die of old age before i got anything done.. but if i find myself doing several projects at once i usually never finish any of them.. so i have to pick an idea and stick with it till i am either done or have given up hope or lost inspiration

I write article like poems and stories untill I finish it . If it doesnot happen then I forget all the things there to write. so I must finish it when I start. I try to leave in the middle and get lazy then but i remember that I forget all those things.

Hi, that's good - that means you have ideas and thoughts flowing through; no writer block. If only my thoughts and ideas can flow like that, then I would not need to jump from article to article! Thanks for sharing, and happy writing!

Whenever I write one I make sure I finish it first before writing another one. Doing so makes it sure that I am consistent in what I'm writing about. However writers have different styles so if you feel comfortable and you are able to finish your works then it would be good for you.

Hi, I noticed there are quite a number of very focused writers like you. It's good to be focused, at least keep me on the job until completion. Right now, it's like so many halfway completed jobs! Thanks, and happy writing!

I like to start, change and stop something, it is horrible to have the feeling of an incomplete something! I never tried to write something but I have a friend that does exactly the same as you do, many stories at the same time, well if you can complete all them why not? LOL

Right, Val, if I can complete them, why not? I've completed some; but there are also a number that I've lost interest or given up. Oh well, maybe I might get back to them one day! Thanks & have a good day!

I kkep at it till I complete it. I do have some stuff that I decided to put off while I work on another piece of work. They remain in the same state I left them in :P I have pretty much learnt that for me, I won't be touching stuff that I put off, so I finish my articles before I start on another one.

i would prefer just to write one piece and stick to it until i finish. unfortunately, i seem to be incapable of doing so. i guess i can say that it's even rare for me to actually finish one these days. back when i was in school i can work on a paper and keep at it until i finish it, but now since i don't have that kind of motivation anymore, i rarely finish the stories i try to write. i can actually recall only 1 that i actually finished. i would try to write one, get bored with it or get writers block, so i move on to another until i end up with 2 or 3 unfinished writings. sigh. i'm so lazy!

Yup, in school, it's like we have to get it done no matter what! And now, even I have a deadline to submit the article, I' procrastinate until the last minute. Just like you, I either have mental block or am just too lazy! Thanks for responding, and happy writing!

Since my ultimate goal is to have my novel published, I will not start working on another novel until the first one is complete and out in the mail. But in the meantime I will write short stories or poems, or even articles for Triond, just so that I can a) get some exposure, b) get some money coming in, c) enter contests or anthologies. I have written one novel which I thought was complete. It is on the shelf waiting for a major overhaul. Novels take several edits until they are polished to perfection and that can take time because, in my case I find it boring. I am finished my second novel and will not go back to the first or start the third (though I have already written an opener for it) until the current WIP is finished and sent out to agents and publishers. But writing poems and short stories in between does not seem to be a problem for me at times. I have been a bit blocked of late but my vacation has given me some new material to work with so hopefully I will have some more articles on Triond soon.

I've always admired writers or anyone who can write a novel..to me, it takes so much effort, dedication and most important of all, the imagination and ideas to string everything together. And also the persistence to see it to completion! I really think you people are great! For me to even come out with an article of 2000-3000 words is something short of a miracle! Thanks and happy writing!

Hi Lazeebee. Sounds like you are a very gifted writer, writing different things at the same time. I couldn't do that. I have to focus on only one at a time. Most of the time I write reviews.

Dear Greenline, thanks - I wish I am, but I'm not. It's more likely that I'm terribly disorganised, unable to concentrate on one subject! I wish I could be more disciplined and focused like you. Thanks & happy writing!

I think I really need to focus on one at a time. I may have several subjects in mind, and I can be researching for more than one, but when I start to write I stay with it until the article is completed. Sometimes I will leave an article half written and start doing something else, like writing a few responses at myLot! Then I can return to the article and find it easier to evaluate what I've written and where I need to go with it. The best moment comes when I have completed an article to my satisfaction, and I can submit it, then I can move on to the next one.

Hi, it is nice to be able to focus on one subject and see it to the end! I often got stuck and have to move on...and sometimes the 'stuck' subject could be stuck for several weeks! Maybe I need to learn to concentrate, get my thoughts organised! Thanks and happy writing!

I start a few things at a time, like you. I'm not focused at all. When I get ideas, I will write them all down and work on them later. Sometimes, I don't have enough materials, so need to search. That's when I will start losing interest. I have a folder on my computer which says "In Progress" I have more than 10 items in there. The advantage is that when I'm out of ideas, I go in and have a look and often try to finish one of them.

Well when I'm writing for an assignment I will usually write it all at once when I have completed my research on it; however when I write for pleasure I'm like you as well. At the moment I am working on a fictional story and I have an idea of how I want the story to go and the basic plot development. I write chapter by chapter with several pieces at a time. Some chapters come along easier than others. The current chapter I am on now is proving to be difficult so its taking me longer. The only thing I have to do is if an idea strikes me is to write it down somewhere before I forget so I can back to it ^_^
