There are two Companies selling Processors for Desktop Computers One is AMD and other is Intel. Both the Companies say themselves better then the others. but which one is better performing and durable. I have used both the processors during my work period and found that AMD processors are better performing but they are power hungry and even having some of the compatibility issues with some of the Applications. eg when I have tried to install Windows 2000 Professional on a Duron 600 Processor Machine. the effort got failed every time. rest other operating systems working perfectly.

Intel climbs Back to the top. Intel's dual and quad core processors are the king of the heap now. In particular, the companies Core 2 Duo/Quad processor lineup is out-pacing AMDs current Athlon64 X2/FX processor families. That may indeed change by the end of Q4'07, or it may not. AMD is partly to blame for its current situation. AMD has not refreshed its CPU lineup. AMD won the battles back then, but relying on the now somewhat dated K8 Athlon64 processor has left AMD without a good competing CPU for Intel's processors.

Intel has had the faster processors since mid 2006. For about 4 years AMD had the faster processors. AMD hasn't been making Durons for almost 6 years now. The fact that you're using a Duron 600 implies that the computer you're dealing with may be over 8 years old. If that's the case, it's likely the computer that's your problem, not AMD specifically. Also as I recall older AMD processors from that generation had heat issues which could potentially shorten their lifespan. Those problems ended around 2003 when they released socket 754.

Intel has the upper hand now when it comes to multiprocessors so lets see AMD perform on their next releases. I have installed win2000 on much earlier Duron with no problem, a friend lend it to me and during those times I was so hooked up with game Diablo II. I wonder why it has problems with your Duron 600.
