Should We Lower the Drinking age?

Our local news station had a poll on this question today. I am glad to say that 67% said to keep it at 21. And, 21% said to lower it to 18. I'm assuming the 21% are 18 or under or around that age because anyone who has lived long enough to be exposed to alcohol abuse know that alcohol and kids don't mix. I realize that they may be considered adults in some ways but in a lot of ways, they just don't have the wisdom to make right choices at that age. I'm not including everyone because there are exceptions to the rule. However, as an aunt to 2 young people who are 17 and 20 and have already got alcohol and drug problems because of a lenient mother, who is my sister, I am all for keeping the drinking age at 21. I just think that keeping the drinking age at 21 gives kids a chance to mature just a little bit and maybe have some experiences that will cause them to choose more wisely when it comes to alcohol. When I was in high school in Texas, it was legal for kids to drink at the age of 18. One of my high school mates died in a drunk driving accident and he was the one drunk. The night before I graduated from high school, several of my classmates were in an accident involving alcohol and were so injured that they were unable to graduate. When I was in college, my younger sister, who was 15 at the time, came to visit me for a few days. She was my responsibility and I had taken care of my siblings since I was 8 so I took that responsibility very seriously. I was not as lenient as my parents were when it came to alcohol so the idea of my sister drinking while in my care was out of the question. However, one day when I got back from class, I discovered my roommate and my sister having a beer. I promptly removed the beer from my sister's hand and told my roommate not to give alcohol to my sister who is a minor. My sister didn't argue with me because she knew that was a lost cause. And, fortunately, she respected me enough not to go against me. I just don't think giving alcohol to minors or to someone who isn't yet mature enough to make wise choices when in the midst of peer pressure to do things that can lead to all kinds of problems is a smart thing to do.

Well, im not much of a drinker but for those who do drink i think they should not lower the legal drinking age and they should keep it at 21 i think some kids are still in school at the age of 18 and should concentrate on more important things besides drinking i understand people want to have a good time but theres other ways to have fun besides drinking and why not just wait until there 21 for that.

I certainly agree with you, WhimsyST. Keep it at 21. Wow, you've been through a lot. Life's crazy that way. Keep the faith, my friend and have an awesome week.

Thanks for your comments, gtargirl. So, why is your handle gtargirl? I mean, is it the obvious or something unusual?

YEars ago the drinking age was 18. They put in to effect when trying to get people to join the service I think for they can vote at 18 and go to war at 18 . Why not let it be that age now never did know why they turned it back to 21

There are a lot of times that I wish they would raise the age to 40. At NFL games, for example.

I can understand that reasoning, especially during the Superbowl.

This was mentioned on our news, and they said that some colleges were even suggesting this was a good idea. No way. Young people - inexperienced drivers - get into accidents more frequently than older more experienced drivers. That's proven by accident and insurance statistics. Young people - at least the ones I've known - also don't think about having a designated driver who will not drink. So they get drunk, then pile into a car, act up and distract the young driver and...bang. An accident. It happens. And it's usually right around graduation. In one town where I lived, 6 teens were killed one night and 3 the next because of teen drunk driving.

I don't know that we should lower the drinking age. But what has always amazed me is that we can send someone to war to die at the age of 18 but yet we won't allow them to drink until age 21. How silly is that?

I do think it's terrible to send young people to war. Unfortunately, they are usually the only ones in the right physical condition to go. I wish we didn't have to have wars period but sometimes it is necessary to fight to protect our freedom.

This is such a bad idea to change the drinking age from 21 to 18. If kids want to drink they will get there hands on it one way or another. Decreasing the drinking age is not going to help. I remember that they increased the drinking age because there were so many young people having accidents. They were drinking and killing themselves and others. For them to change the drinking age back to 18 will only start the drunk driving again. Then that would really look bad on those that want to lower the drinking age. That would really be a bad thing if the do that.

I am glad to hear that more people voted to keep the drinking age at twenty one instead of lowering it to eighteen,if anything they need to raise the drinking age to twenty three or something,or make it against the law to drink, because too many people drink and drive, and hurt innocent people, and there are also a bunch of people who get drunk and hurt others, and some people just get mean when they are drunk.

I do not believe we should lower it either, life it is hard for teens and parents as it is, now with permision to drink very young, I do not even want to think about it

It doesn't matter whether you lower it, raise it, or keep it the same. Minors are still going to find ways to do it. I think parents should be more lenient and let kids drink at home, that way they can keep their eye on them. I'm only 17 and I have plenty of suppliers over the age of 21, and I know peoples parents who let whoever drink in their basement as long as they're spending the night and give the keys to the parents. It's whatever as long as you're being responsible.
