I want to build and manage my own site without the direct help of any professionals. I will go for free website templates available on the net. So for starting and managing my own website, what should i learn, like any programming language or something like that? I would like to get advices from those who have experience with hosting websites. I would like to know about tutorials available over the net which would help me. thanks in advance.

there are lots of different ways to go about making a website, some of the fundamentals are addressed in this article: http://www.livewyre.net/buildwebsite/website.php You don't really need to go to the lengths of learning HTML or any other language if you use some software like Dreamweaver or Frontpage - that's how I started out anyhow...

i suggest that you make use of the free web tools and hosts as your stepping stone. and once you're already familiarized with some of the basics, that's the time you build your own out of your own resources.

I had a website making project before. I used microsoft frontpage then uploaded the files in geocities. But I dont recommend it if you would update your website from time to time. I suggest weebly.com. It's really easy to use. You may add a blog to your website as well. However, the designs are really simple.

I find a good and easy way to start is by using something that includes a site builder. Freewebs.com is free, and it's very easy to create a professional looking site, just follow the instructions. You don't need to know any HTML or CSS, but if building websites is something you will be doing a lot of, then it would be very beneficial to learn at least some basic HTML, there are tutorials available online, just type 'HTML tutorial' into a search engine. Good luck!
