what I always thought this meaning meant was that your friends shape what type of person you are. If you hang around with people that are no good- everyone will see you as no good as well. If your friends are people that are well rounded, do their studies, help out others in need, then you will be looked upon as someone that does that as well. If this is what the saying really means, then i think it does hold true to now a days still. I always told my mom that she was nuts when she told me that and that I didn't care what others thought of me (which I don't) but I now understand what she meant and I now look at younger people and judge them by the croud they hang out with and how they dress. I don't know these people and I could be totally wrong, but from what I see, that's what it looks like.

I don't know for sure but, I would guess that it means that you can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep. So, if you hang out with a bunch of people who like to get up to trouble a lot, you might be a bit of a trouble maker yourself. If you hang out with a bunch of low key, quiet people, you are probably pretty low key yourself. I don't really know that it holds true. I think it might for me because, I tend to surround myself with people who know how to take a joke because I like to joke around with my friends a lot. I don't like people who might take offense to everything I say. I can be a bit sarcastic and, if I have to worry about everything I say, I don't want to hang out with that person. And, I expect the same from my friends. I expect them to be able to joke with me and to know that they can say anything to me and it won't offend me. We always have fun together because we know we don't have to keep any guards up around ourselves amongst one another.

That idea comes from the bible. The quotation is, "Be not deceived. Bad companions corrupt good morals."
