Depends on the bank. Barclays for instance charge £35 for going over your overdraft, they then charge you a further £35 for any further transactions up to a maximum of three £35 charges in any one month. Thats a whopping £105 for what could be 3 £1 transactions. Oh they expect you to be back under your limit within a couple of weeks or you will get a disapproving letter Hope this is helpfull and also proves what con merchants banks can be

Barclays dont charge you by the day, dont know about abbey. Have you thought about reclaiming any charges you incurred over the last 6 years?

About £25 is typical, maybe as much as £35. Not just for going overdrawn, but a similar amount if they return a direct debit unpaid. The law only allows them enough to cover administration, and the banks claim these kind of amounts are fair, but there is a court case in progress at the moment to try to establish that these charges are illegal. It's not expected to be settled till next year, but if the case is successful, people will be able to claim their bank charges back for the last six years. In my particular case, that would amount to several thousand pounds. Only last month they hit me with £100 in charges. Have you ever noticed that "bank" is a four letter word?
