National Senior Citizens Day honors our elderly population. On this day, we are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribution of elderly people to home, family and society. In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older."On National Senior Citizens Day, we should: * Spend some time with senior citizens * Show our appreciation for senior citizens * Do volunteer work in support of the elderly If you are a senior citizen, enjoy your day any way you desire. After all, this is your day! Make sure to take advantage of senior citizens specials and discounts. There's bound to be plenty offers today. The Origin of National Senior Citizens Day:On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be August 21. There are many, many other "Senior Citizen Days" on various dates around the world. Many countries local communities and organizations have declared or held senior citizen days. See the Congressional Proclamation (http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/speeches/1988/081988b.htm) of National Senior Citizens Day. So if you are senior citizen, please enjoy your day!!! If you are not a senior please show a little random of act of kindness today.

Hey kimbers867. You KNOW I'm gonna have a comment on this one! I'm thinking I would be considered a Senior Citizen! Well, maybe not. I wonder what age this president declared as "senior." Anyhoo, I feel like a senior citizen on most days and my hair is gray! So, I think that qualifies. The problem with finding out this late in the evening that it's Senior Citizen Day AND being a senior citizen, is that I'm much too tired to celebrate! I showed my husband a random act of kindness by fixing his dinner...

Hi friend, lets ask ourselves. Are we giving required respect and honour for senior citizen. I think in present scenario there is no time for busy children and grandchildren. They have to stay alone. Lets give honour and respect to our elders. Thanks

WOW. So you guys still honor your grandparents? I thought people in the USA have no time for their grandpas and mas now. But now I know you guys still do. I saw both of my grandparents today and I just love them. They are very important to our lives.
