Yes, you read that correctly. An Italian priest is starting a beauty pageant for Nuns to "give them more visibility within the Catholic Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour." This is a pretty interesting concept. Being a Nun I am sure has been going "out of fashion" since a lot of Nuns are not seen in mainstream society. for some reason i pictured those calendars that have like fire fighters on them.. a nun of the month hahahahahaha.. but hey as long as its done in good taste and helps them either better their image and humanize them or helps them find more people to join i dont see anything wrong with it.. it is bizarre though hahaha

I did a little research and I found that this pageant has already been shot down. I think he might have had better luck with it if he'd approached it from another angle other than a beauty pageant...perhaps a religious calendar featuring groups of nuns from different areas with sections on what community works they do, what their interests are and their own outlook at the world. While nuns are just as human as anyone else they seem to be held in a sort of awe and while some might want to know more about them and their vocation, I can kind of see why the priest's superiors shot down the idea. wouldnt that be promoting vanity though? I mean you cant be in any sort of beauty pageant without being a LITTLE vain at least IMO..its part of the game ya know... To each his own of course and all the power to them but I just dont see how that could be even remotely considered a Catholic approved thing ya know..

I really like this, as long as it is tastefully done. I think people forget that nuns and priests are people, and drawing attention to their individual likes / dislikes, hobbies, etc will change the way people view nuns. Ultimately, people need to realize that nuns (and of course, priests) don't give up their personalities when they commit their lives to god. Heroes are more interesting if they are relatable.

Actually, the more traditional orders are seeing a lot of interest from younger women. Why be a nun and give up the opportunity to marry and have kids if all you are is a social worker in an ugly suit? Most devout Catholics who enter religious life now are looking for the real commitment to a real life of service, prayer and holiness. Look up the Fransiscans of the Renewal, and the Sisters of the Renewal and you will see what I mean. Having said all that, the beauty pageant idea is a little loopy to say the least!
