Stephanie Meyer's The Twilight Saga

So, uhm. I haven't read this series and I wasn't really aware of its existence until suddenly, all the people I know who loved (and were obsessed) with Harry Potter started hating it with a passion. I looked around a little and asked the same friends who hated it why they hated it and apparently, uh, what? It's the next bestseller after Harry Potter or something? It's Buffy only not as funny? Stephanie Meyer is confrontational and compares her series with Harry Potter in every interview? The movie posters suck? Yeah, so that's what my friends say, so now I'm wondering: what is this series about and why is it so hated? Or loved, since apparently it's a super best-seller. I'm not asking for spoilers or anything (though I wouldn't mind any; vampires + highschool, when not with much funny, is not my thing), but I would like some opinions regarding the book/movie whether you're a fan or not.

I heard from friends who have read it, they said the story was decent if you loved romance so much. They don't recommend it for anyone who likes Harry Potter or Discworld series. My younger sister hates twilight with a passion. I don't really understand why, because she loves Anne Rice's interview with the vampire. I did catch a few words about stupid girl and vampire jerk from her ranting.

Ah, so it's a predominantly romantic story? I guess I should have thought of that when the movie posters I saw looked, uh, the way they do. Apparently the girl's a highschool student and the vampire's 100+ (why he's in HS, I don't know, but he's 100+, a vampire, and in highschool; there are other more unusual things in the world, I suppose) and angsty. It already seemed like an, "Against All Odds" type of romance to me, but I was thinking I might be prejudging. Do you know why there seems to be a great divide between HP and Twilight fans? I've asked, but, I mean. Hate isn't really an easy emotion to pinpoint. So my friends' answers were too ranty for me to find coherent reasons. LOL. Stupid girl and vampire jerk. If you take out the vampire in that sentence, that's like a majority of romance stories I've read (I'm unlucky in titles).

I saw it in the bookstore yesterday and it was surrounded by tee shirts and all kinds of hype. It's obvious they want to make this author and series the same thng Like the Ann Rice books. I didnt even know it was about vampires until I saw all the vampire stuff surrounding it in the bookstore. I think I might get on the list though at my local library just to see if I like it or not.

Whoa, really? It must be really popular then if the merchandise people are banking on its name to sell their stuff. With the vampire themes and popularity it has, I guess the Anne Rice comparison/treatment is unavoidable. I wonder if Meyer will become as, uh, eccentric as Anne Rice in her treatment of her fans, though. I mean, I was never really into her books but even I knew of her notoriety regarding fan-treatment. I was planning to read it too, because I (finally!) found a friend who actually liked the series, but I don't know. This is a friend who's tastes vary greatly from mine. The friends I have who I share a brain with (heh) all seem to hate this book. I wonder if they hate it after reading or just hated it on principle though. Anyway, thanks for replying! Oh, if we still remember this topic in the future, would you mind giving a brief review of the story?

The Twilight Saga is quite big in the US. It's for the younger crowd. Might want to compare it with Interview with the Vampire..

Yeah, I heard it was a phenomenal hit. Young adult, is it? I'm not really into YA, nor highschool/vampire fics so I didn't know about this series. Then, my friends started ranting about how horrible it is and how they can't believe how popular it is. Mostly, they started ranting after the movie posters started circulating the intrawebs. Since I didn't know about it, I asked and, well. It was certainly an interesting experience. XD I don't get the hatred. Maybe it's a popularity thing? Then again, I heard the author herself seems intent on making comparisons between her series and HP. I was just wondering if other people know a better story on the matter. Thanks for replying! :)
