Mentally disabled children in the same classes with other children?

How do you feel about children who are mentally disabled being "mainstreamed"? Do you feel it affects the way the other children learn? If there is an autistic, or retarded child or more than one as is often the case, doesn't this lower the standards in the classroom?

There is nothing wrong in main streaming mentally disabled. It may even help them to become normal. But special measures need to be taken and other childrens need to prevented making fun of them. Teachers should be understanding and help them over come their disability

It surely is. I am a teacher and I know how frustrating it is when there one like that in the classroom. Kids who needs special attention should be in the right place for them to learn with same pace with others of the same ability with them. I mean, they should be put together with other kids who have special needs and be with a trained teacher who work on this type of job. I had once a student just like what you said, I advice the parents to enroll the child in a special school who can cater her needs. Good they listened because she never learned in my class. Her level of intelligence is like kindergarten and she is already 10 years old. Sometimes you need to be frank to the parents and explained to them the situation of their kids because most parents would not accept that their kids are dumb. But when they understand it, they would be very glad of your help.

If a child can keep up in a normal classroom setting, I don't' have problem with it. I always worry that someone with special needs are not getting their needs met and not getting the full learning experience.

I do see this situation that you are speaking of as making some sense. It does have some credibility to it. I feel very sorry for children of a certain caliber. The ones who are a little slower than your average child. It is good for the mentally retarded or autistic child to be able to blend in with others and feel accepted. It is a human need. However I think they still need to be somewhat sectioned off when it comes to one on one help. It is just the practicality of it.

Hi friend,It affects the other children and also the autistic child as other children will certainly make fun of the child. So both the children get affected.normal children in regular schools and autistic children in special schools. This will silve the problem.Even the school authorites will not allow autistic children to study in regular schools.thanks for sharing.happy mylotting

I think mentally disabled children should be in a regular school setting.I think some of the other children might act up thinking its ok because other children are acting up because of being mentally disabled.i dont think it would lower the classroom standards.
