Putting away the things of a child

Do you still have one or some of the toys that you played with as a child. Do you still play with it? Have you kept it for sentimental reasons (a dolly your grandma made for you etc?) or just never got around to giving it away? Are there any toys that you wish you had hung on to?

I have a Snoopy stuffed animal that I got from a family friend when I was two years old. I also have a stuffed teddy bear that I have had since I was a baby. It is the ugliest thing ever! My mom told me that I loved that bear so much that once while we were travelling that they had accidentally left it at a hotel in Alabama; my dad had to turn around and go back to get it because I was crying so much for it. It sits up in my closet to this day. Those are the only two "toys" that I still have from when I was little.

Hello Modestah. I don't have any toys played when I was a kid, but my son still keeps his toys and sometimes gives some of them to his niece. We don't want him to keep all of the toys as they occupy space of the apartment. I am glad that most of the toys are gone to his niece.

yes, it is good to pass some along as they accumulate - but nice, also, to hold on to a few that are special.

Sorry, friend. I made a mistake. Please allow me to correct it. It is my son's cousin, not niece. My niece, his cousin, is only five.

Ohh...I don't have those stuff with me..Mom give them to our cousins and friends before and I also decided to even give my clothes when I was 0-10 years old because it was still with us and I only kept few of them, the one I had during my 1st birthday and during special occasions!

it is a good thing that useful items are passed on to others, rather than go to waste (or collect dust) :)

I don't have anything from when I was a child and not sure where they went to either. My hubby still has his baby blanket that his mother gave to me, for my son when he was born, I'll keep that and pass it onto him when he has his own family.

I didn't save anything from my childhood because my mom didn't like all the clutter in the attic. I wish I would have saved my Nancy Drew books, they were my favorite.

yeah, my mom did not want to haul the stuff so she got rid of it before every move we made (dad was military) there were a few things I still wish that she had not gotten rid of... some of my favorite child hood books.

NO i dont have any toys etc which i used to play with as a child. I simply would give away any items which i got bored of playing and would buy new ones instead. When my chidren play with there toys and games some old memories do come back the way i used to enjoy the games with my brother.

I can remember playing with lincoln logs and tinker toys - back when they were made out of wood - and the certain scent they had (and taste, hehe) When honeycomb cereal first came out I thought they stole the design from tinker toys.

Oh Modestah, yes there are many of my dolls I wish I still had. I do have a few precious ones that have managed to make it into my adulthood and beyond. Now they sit in a corner of my room, and sometimes I lovingly pick them up and clean them. My Grand daughter and I sit and talk about them and I tell her stories about when I was her age and played with them. I have been collecting dolls for years before she ever came into being which she already has, but these few special few I keep but someday she will have them as well. Part of that little girl I once was is still there in my heart somewhere.

that is so sweet, angelwhispers! I think with dolls especially there is a sort of bond with our child hood playthings - maybe because with dolls we started forming our personality as a parent... we took them to heart, I guess.

I'll tell you about a toy I have that someone will have to pry away from me. It is a Steve Urkel doll. You remember that show Family Matters? You know the nerd who said, got any cheese, and did I do that? I have a doll of him and you pull a string and he says those phrases he was noted for on that show. I remember buying it for seven dollars at KB Toy store. I get a kick out of it now that I'm older. If I have kids someday they are going to think I'm weird. Which I am, but still...

oh wow! yeah that whiney voice "did I do that" can still be heard in my memory. I remember those dolls. it must have meant something to you to have saved for it 0r the purchase was important that you recall what you paid. I must say that I would have never guessed an urkel doll to be a sentimental object. thanks for the smile!

The toys I hung on to I have passed along to my daughters......I kept my bride doll and a set of twins dolls. They are now enjoying them...or saving them I should say. But when my sisters and I used to antique alot we would see toys we had and wish we had hung on to them and sold them for five times what they were worth! LOL

When my parents moved us when Dad retired from the military I was 11 years old and had my favorite doll - a Christy doll. I gave it to our neighbor's little girls... we went back for a visit several years later and the girls now almost completely grown still had that doll - and she was just as nice as when I had last saw her.... they kept her put up as special... though I carried that baby doll around with me everywhere.
