New Legislation To Be Passed To Protect Pet-Type Animals From Labs

I just got this email alert from the Big Cat Rescue about how an extension of the Farm Bill under the heading of The Pet Safety and Protection Act, otherwise known as, "Buck's Bill is under consideration to be passed to protect pet type animals such as dogs and cats from winding up in labs. People known as "bunchers" routinely make rounds trying to collect pets usually and especially those advertised as "Free to a Good Home" (such as Craigslist) or even resort to stealing pets from owners, give them to "dealers" who then sell them to labs for experimentation. On the Big Cats Rescue there is even a form you can fill out that will be sent to your local politicians, to encourage them to pass this bill...The letter that is included in this form goes as such. (Quote) I would like to ask you to fully support S. 714/H.R. 1280, the Pet Safety and Protection Act, by signing on as a co-sponsor, working to move this bill to a full floor vote, and voting favorably so that this important bill will be passed into law. This legislation will prevent dogs and cats from being funneled into research laboratories by Class B dealers and the "bunchers" who round up animals for these dealers, with a long history of trafficking in stolen pets. Often, Class B Dealers will respond to "free to good home" ads for pets, or simply abduct any pets that they find outside, sometimes, even taking them from yards. This horrible practice must stop. The link to this website and form is here http://capwiz.com/bigcatrescue/issues/alert/?alertid=11868486&type=CO As you can imagine I signed the form...Are or were you aware that many pet animals are rounded up especially those that are given away free do often wind up in labs? I did which is why I get so angry at especially craigslist which is famous for people advertising giving pets free to a good home.

Hi Black cat, I can't help but felt pity for our wandering little friends. Animals rounded up in labs is not really a new issues. For all I know, this already existed as far back as the birth of Einstein. Philippines is home to many cat and dog's scavengers. I do not know what kind of action the government is planning or if there's any for the little creatures. But you can see them roaming around the street. Most of the time, I felt compelled to back away from them. They were so dirty and geez, maybe packed full of rabies. I heard from a friend that some drunkards will catch stray dogs and cook them. Horrible but a sad fact of life.:(

No idea about the situation in your area. But here in my country, stray dogs and cats are practically everywhere. And oh yea...my mom used to give away our puppies to close friends. This were done after a thorough screening. Like if the puppies will be well taken care of. Will they be given a nice and comfortable shelter. Anyway, most my mom's friends were pretty decent people.

That's great of your mother to do that, at least it was usually people she knew well to give puppies away...unfortunately too many people hand over a pet to just anyone and anyone and not know who the person really is.

I was not aware that so many pets that are given away to a good home go to labs like that. My brother had some puppies that he could have sold, but chose to give away to "good" homes. He was very selective about who got the puppies because he wanted them to be taken care of. He even recently got a photo of Louis and Cholie (2 he gave away) on their birthday. I think if people were a little bit more choosy about who they gave their unwanted pets to this sort of thing would be less common.

Since I know a lot of pet rescuers and have done a bit of rescues myself I'm sadly all too aware of this going on....and is it any wonder? Unscrupulous people who sell pet animals to a lab can make about $300 per animal!

Here's a good article to read about this...doesn't mention how much people can get for animals sold at labs but verifies about the "Free to good home" thing http://www.sniksnak.com/stealing.html

Thank you for the information. I was not aware of such procedure. My animals are sometimes on my yard when I am at home, but I guess I have to check them every few minutes to make sure they are not stolen. My heart stopped for second. I am sending my petition now. Hope we can safe some pets. HUGS

I never take my dogs when shopping and never let them stay on my yard when I am not at home. I treat my dogs like babies.... I hate to see dogs alone in the car or dogs alone tide in the front of coffee shop or shopping.

I get so ticked off when I see a dog and its leash chained or tied up on parking meter poles while the owner is inside shopping....more dogs are stolen this way...Like if you KNOW you're going shopping why bring the dog along?

Your post reminded me of a time a couple of years back, pyewacket, when I was a member of freecycle.com. Evidently the problem of pets falling into the wrong hands was uppermost in their minds because they posted a notice that they would no longer accept offers of free pets to anyone that could provide them with a good home. I am happy that someone is doing something about this problem and I will gladly sign the petition. I didn't know about the "bunchers," but, perhaps they should instead be called "butchers."

Hi pye, I am sick to my stoach of people being cruel to animal in all sorts of things the law shoukd put a stop to right now, can't they stop experimenting on animal? I am so glad my two cats are always indoor and when they do out they are never far, all my neighbours got cats and we are a close neighbours and that is why I feel quite safe about my cats. I think the world should stop being cruel to animals, I am so angry. Bright Blessings Tamara

I don't understand why they still experiment on animals either when for over twenty years alternative means have been known
