How does 'The Secret' impact on Catholicism/Christianity?

So I've been visualising a few things lately, in line with the teachings in The Secret, with little to moderate success. I realise that it's only just a method of positive thinking but I can't help but wonder - when we take matters into our own hands by visualising, requesting things of the universe, aren't we circumventing God or a higher power's purpose? I've been feeling a little bit guilty about it because it feels like being independent and following our own paths rather than the path that perhaps God has set out for us. Just a few thoughts, anyway.

I haven't read the book, but I have a bit of an idea what it is about... If you believe in God, then you probably also believe that God gave us free will. God didn't put us down on earth with free will to do nothing but exactly as he said. If he was going to do that, he might as well had just made us entirely perfect without any faults and only willing to do what he told us to. He's God, so we can assume that that would be possible for him. Instead, I think, God gave us free will in order to grow and try things and see where things could be taken. And why should any teachings that lead to positive thinking and to furthering ourselves be against what God has set out for us? We don't know what he has in plan, only he knows. But we do know that what he wants us to do is positive things, so I'd guess that anything that leads us to becoming more aware of ourselves and others and makes us start thinking positively in order to further ourselves, through whatever means there are, would be in line with his plan.

The universe is abundant. We can ask as much as we like, the universe is like a mirror. What you put out, it is reflected back at you! It has nothing to do with religion per se, it does not effect beliefs, it is just a thought pattern, nothing more and nothing less. God would not have created an abundant universe if he did not want you to make use of it! How is it working for you? I have been so blessed since i started asking! It's like money is falling into my wallet every day... without effort! :) Thought creates.

I see your point, but I'm so used to praying to one God, or having people speak about God's blessing in a really personal, one on one type of way. So far I've only really gained seats on a crowded bus or a few cents from using the secret. I guess when I get more confident about asking I'll see more results, but I'm careful not to put limits on things. My goals are longer term, including a financial sum I want by the end of the year (like in the movie, although nowhere near 100k) and a particular job interview for the end of next year. I guess if someone had told me 'Just focus on the positive and you'll get more of it' rather than 'The Secret is the key to the forces of the universe' (which conveys other influences, like magic, etc, which is where the clash with religion comes in) then I would be laughing. Or maybe it depends on your intention. Do you think that the universe is abundant for us all to receive from it?

It's good to start off small and gain more confidence. That is the way i started out also. The more confidence i gained, the more i asked for. I believe the universe has an unlimited supply of abundance. But if you don't ask, you won't receive. So the key is asking for, and gratefully receiving. The other thing about it is you have to be grateful for what you have in your life, keep being grateful about everything you have. The more grateful you are, the more you will receive. The person who can receive, will keep receiving. I was told from my teacher that, you have to accept offers of help, even in every day life. For example if someone offers to help you wash the dishes, accept gratefully, the universe will then know you will happily accept help, and will send you more help, monetary or otherwise. This is how you can open the gate to receive more and more. It's not just about receiving money, it's how you receive everything in your life. I think everyone can receive abundance from the universe, all they have to do is ask. I think alot of people think they can't receive, so therefore they don't. Their thoughts are creating their reality. If they just got over the fact that they CAN do what they want, they CAN have money or be rich, it would be so easy for them to move forward in their lives. It's all about thought patterns. I understand how religion could make you think that it is all so wrong to believe in this. However, i don't think that your god would look down on you for trying to make the most out of your life, and what is out there in the universe for you. I don't think that god would look down on you for helping yourself and for having a great life. You are only enhancing your life experience. You can also help others with your positive thinking, by teaching them how to help themselves too.

Didn't Jesus say "Knock and it shall be opened unto you, ask and you shall receive". That's all you're doing. Knocking at the door of the universe letting your desires be known. It's not wrong to want to better yourself. We say "My Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills", but we feel guilty asking for a better life. God IS the universe. To ask of the universe is to ask of God. Just because you're not on your knees in the traditional attitude of prayer doesn't mean that you're not praying when you let your desires be known, when you visualize them and make an effort to draw them into your life. We are made to feel selfish if we ask for something for ourselves, but I ask you, if we can't better our own lives, how can we help others?
