venice water..stinky?

well i am just soo curious about this..some people been to venice/venezia says that the water is stinky..because its a canal..is it true?

I was under the impression that Venice in particular is stinky because of the crumbling buildings. I thought that they were rotting away and that it caused an odor. I dont know that I know of anyone who has been there personally so I think that I cant really tell you for certain.

I don't know about Venice, but a teacher told me that Rome smells because they don't have a modern sanitation system. I imagine it could be true for Venice as well.

Sister was there last July and she said it wasn't stinky at all. Some people do say that it's a bit smelly but I think it depends on the time they visited the place.
