I have always wonder how could I start my own community like web site? I see sites like my space, facebook, and even mylot get so much traffic and I always wonder how they got started. Now I would like to know does anyone know any company or someone that could help me out with this question because I am very interested in actually making a web site type of community if someone could help me out with my question. How much money would you think that I have to invest or could I pay a company or someone to do it for me?

You can start by setting up a forum. That alone takes time and I spent around 2 years as a forum administrator, gather a community, post around and create content and harmony amongst members. Then after some time, you can make some sort of announcement on where you can go from there and expand to social networking possibilities and then asking your loyal members to try the alpha/beta stage (where all social networks begin) It takes alot of time and web development skills as mentioned earlier and a good deal of resources. However forums are inexpensive and a good way to start community building. Also certain board software may have some social network modifications or modules etc. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Whew, sorry I replied late, been busy here. Anyway, one of the popular free board solutions is Proboards. You can search for that online and register an admin account quickly for free. It is easy to set up, but lacks flexibility if you want to add or modify the code. If you have plenty of time, you might want to get a web hosting that supports PHP/MySQL and then set up phpBB my recommended forum solution. It takes some time to get used to the features, but it's a solid forum solution.

Making your own social networking community is not an easy task. I takes a lot of effort to make a social networking site and it is not a good idea to try to make one if you dont know anything about web developing. It would cost you a lot to get one started in the first place then bug fixes and security issues will drain you financially.

thanks for your answer but what would be the best way to make a website that wont drain someone financially. Lets say not a community but something like a regular website?

A standard website is not that much of a problem It is a one time payment or better if you learn to make one yourself or froma WYSIWYG editor.
