My son turned 4 yesterday. The day was nearly perfect in everyway. We woke early for some playtime with daddy before he went to work. We used to do that more often and have been slacking, so it was a huge treat for my son. Then he had an ice skating lesson. The child loves learning to ice skate. He is not good at all yet but he thinks it is huge fun to keep trying. After that he wanted a chocolate milk from Starbucks and he wanted to drink it inside...... so cute how very specific he was about wanting that. The town I live in has 14+ Starbucks locations and all but one have drive thrus, we usually drive thru. He made friends with EVERYONE in the coffee shop and ended up receiving a free cookie for his birthday. Later, he had a friend come over to play with his new toys with him. I loved giving the mother of his visiting friend sometime to herself while making my son so happy with a playmate. I gushed with pride at how well he shared all his new toys and worked out 'taking turns' on his own, without my help. We had mad, crazy, exciting games of Hungry, Hungry Hippo and made many fire rescues with his new ladder fire truck. The phone rang off the wall as everyone in my family called with well wishes for the birthday boy. By the end of the day, he would even ask me if it was for him when he heard my laptop say I had a message. I talked online with several friends and family as I observed his developing social skills in action and hoped that one day he will value friends/family as much as I have grown to. My best friend and her family were scheduled to come to dinner. Her son is two but our boys play so well as if there were not a day of age difference between them. So determined was I to have a laid back, quality-time day, that I spent my free time on Sunday preparing his birthday meal so that I would not allow myself to get caught up in entertaining. Dinner with friends was amazing as conversation flowed so naturally and we laughed until we cried on at least 3 occassions. Then, the mom thing happened...... the boys were being too quiet. We snuck in to find them surrounded by toys on the floor, PBS Kids television in the background and they had leaned back against the couch to watch. Both were sound asleep sitting straight up and my son had his arm around my friends son. We must of 15 pictures of that moment between the two of us. Lol! As I put him to bed, the last thing he said to me was, "Mommy, I loved my birthday. Can I be four again tomorrow?" I lay on the floor in his room, staring at the ceiling waiting for the sleep breathing to come and tears filled my eyes. It had been exactly the day I wanted for my son. He will have a party with all his friends this weekend but my heart knows that the value of this day, well spent, will mold him the most for the year to come. So, my near perfect day begins and ends with knowing my son is happy, is peppered with connections with people who matter to me, includes doing nice things for others and stands out as an obvious expression of growth for me as a person. Last year I got so caught up in the details of his birthday that I wasn't sure I had taken the time to just enjoy my son. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1278744.aspx I have come a long way my dear myLotters. I am very proud of myself and my near perfect day. What does a near perfect day look like to you????????? Do you have a special day you feel like sharing with us all?

My near perfect day is waking up in my hubby's arms, snuggling, and then making breakfast. We sit at the table together, talking and laughing for half an hour or so, then get cleaned up and dressed for the day. Next, we prepate sandwiches and pack a picnic lunch, and head out to the park. We bring the frisbee, his stunt kite, a ball, a blanket and some bug spray! We take a little hike when we first get there, enjoying the beautiful walking trails. Then we tear at a few pieces of stale bread and feed the ducks at the pond. We hunt a spot for our picnic and spread the blanket, and feast on fresh fruit and the sandwiches. We rest our bellies for a bit, and then head back to the pond to ride the paddle boats (my husband loves this!). Then we take a walk around the pond, viewing the amazing lilly pads, and eventually wind up at the concession for a cherry slush. We walk back to our picnic basket and get the kite, moving to a place clear of too many people. We fly the kite and play frisbee until dusk, and usually hang around to watch the sun go down. Then we head home and make dinner together. I love spending time with my husband like this, and I can't wait until we have little ones to share it with.

Thank you for sharing that with us :) I loved it... it was very personal and great! I'm so glad your son had the perfect "birthday"... what a great kid you have! I'm going to try to take a page out of your book. My daughter turns 12--- yes 12 tomorrow. I want the day to be perfect for her as well. She does have school and volleyball practice. But every other moment I want to be fun-- exciting- relaxing--- and I want her to think it was the best day of her life. We are having the family birthday party on Saturday. That is 11 kids coming from the age of 1-12.... I have spent the last couple of days on lunch buying goodie bag stuff---- for all the various ages. I have 1 more to shop for. Her cousin who is 12 already- I need girl stuff. Again thanks for sharing your special day with us--- enjoy these days as they go so fast!

I do not have a day to share at this time. I did want to come and congratulate you on not "Building and Elephant" which is what I have been known to do on special occasions, Hubby calls it over engineering. It does sound like a wonderful day for both of you, and I am glad you got pictures. He is growing up to be a fine young man, and Mom is growing with him.

Thanks for the very nice comment. Mommy sure tries to grow right along with her fine young man. The 15 pictures we got were all different shots of the two of them crashed at the end of the day. It was just so cute..... then we wanted to make sure you could see the arm around the shoulder, and the toys surrounding them, and on an on. Hahaha We were both such mommmies about it all.

Oh wow your kid is really so cute i thing , he has enjoyed his birthday so well while reading this discussion it made me to think of my birthday , the essence cannot be forgotten still .It was my guy who made my birthday bloom that is so lovely , he sent me flowers and cakes and watches and everything that i need i got perfumes balloons etc he is too far away from me he is living in different country for work but he just wanted to make my day perfect as he knows my parents weren't able to make it perfect with so much gifts and they are not that showy type eventhough they love me , so my guy just showed all the love like that of a mom ,dad and even tears rolled down my eyes because i felt my day perfect ..

Awww, that's so great! Your son sounds like a good little boy. I hope my own children can be so well behaved and appreciative! A four year old who can share and play with a two year old with no encouragement or assistance from the parent? That is so great! And so cute that he fell asleep with his friend like that! It must have been adorable!

Thanks for the nice response. The two year old is an exceptionally well behaved little guy and he adores my son. They play so well together because they really are just crazy about each other. It is adorable!

A child playing with a dog. - This is a picture of a boy with a dog.
I am not sure that there is a such thing as a perfect day but there could be an almost perfect day. I usually have a routine all my own. I have a husband and my son is going to be five next Wednesday. I am very excited about it. Time goes by fast doesn't it? My son likes that kids television too. I find that some of the tv that he watches is very educational. Kids can really pick up on this at the age that my son and your child are at. They are very impressionable too. I am just happy if my son is happy and I enjoy watching him play with our new puppy.

I hear ya, bamakelly, that's why I made a point of calling it a near perfect day. I think perfection would scare me .
