I use Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on my new XPS that was ment for vista. Well it works with out much of a problem the web cam was a little trouble so was the wireless card at first but there was drivers for the wireless card as well as the graphics card Nividia. I have found it to be able to play games and do everything that I want a computer to do the only thing I am currently lacking is the support to watch some flash movies. I haven't tried youtube.com yet. I have fallen in love with Ubuntu. I installed it at the suggestion of one of my friends. I didn't like it for about 6 months and wanted to install windows again but i stuck with it and wow I am glad I did it is an awesome operating system and it seems like you would have to pay for an os this good. :) I have fallen in love with this os and the Open Source software style and am writting a few open source apps myself right now. :)

If you like Ubuntu then you will adore LinuxMint. Its better Ubuntu then Ubuntu itself(It is based on ubuntu). Give it a try it will give you a complete out of the box experience. I have been using it from last 3 years now and all my hardware worked out of the box, It even has all the plugins installed by default so it really makes life simple. Do let me know your experience. Thanks for responding. Take care.

In searching for a good desktop distribution, I have tried Ubuntu, OpenSusue, Centos, Fedora....... I ended up with a distibution called Arch Linux. This is a lightweight operating system, wich runs fast and efficient. I have a 192MB old PC....all distribution eiher not work or work slowly, until I put in Arch Linux......GNOME is still very responsive in my old PC. Installation may not be as simple as Ubuntu or Fedora.....but, the result is really worth the effort. Good documentation in Archi Linux web site too.

I did try Arch once and i liked it a lot , specially cos it feels more like FreeBSD than Linux :-) Only issue is , One got to have a good broadband connection to support Pacman which i dont have right now, that is the only thing stopping me from replacing my curreent distributions with Arch. Thanks for such valuable information to all of us. DO let me know if you do something special with Arch tho.

I know this discussion may be old but still , I want to use ubuntu on my computer too. I just don't have any experience with installing new operating systems without calling my technician friend. Well , I also have a question about viruses : what ani virus can you recomend me to install ? I'm really tired of ESET node 32 , I have to reinstall it every month on my windows... Is ubuntu really stronger against viruses and other threats ? What things can I do with the Shell that I can't do with the graphic user interface ?
