My Son wants to Breakdance

My son is 6 and he wants to break dance. I like to watch those dance shows like SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DACE and AMERICA'S BEST DANCE CREW and so on, so he does see breaking and popping and all of those. He tried to imitate it and its really cute. I don't have money to send him to lessons and he keeps on trying in the house. I just told him to practice as much as he can. I think he tries to windmills in my living room. My husband used to breakdance back in the days (in the 80's) and he hasn't done it in a LONG time, so he's out of shape. I want him to try to teach him something, but he's so busy with work and school. What steps can I take to encourage my son? I want him to do it right so he doesn't hurt himself or other. I try to make sure he doesn't try doing things like that at school so he doesn't make a bad impression and maybe accidentally kick someone. I know its good exercise for him so I'm all for it. It keeps him active.

Hi. emarie. I think that you should allow him to be introduced to a break dancing instructor. That way, he can practice his dance moves. And this person can show him all of the ropes there is to know about this skill. Good Luck to your son. And I hope that he will be careful too!

Hi emarie, I wish they have organization in the school to cater kids who love this stuff! I have also a relatives who were twins and started learning it in their house and in the long run, they were able to meet other teens who are doing this and it helps them improve their skills!

I would be all for it for him to try to do it also as long as he is careful and does not get hurt himself also. He just may be our next star.

My son also loved to break dance at that age. He was pretty good too! He's older now (WAY older at 22!) and I hear he's a good dancer but he won't ever dance in front of me. I just let him dance but I was also worried about the possibility of injury. Kids can see things on TV and think they can do it but it isn't as easy as it seems. There were no lessons to take when when my son was young (and we couldn't afford them if there were) so I just kind of had to watch over him and remind him that certain moves were dangerous. He never hurt himself and he learned watching shows (although shows like Dance Crew weren't on so he learned from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and music videos). I think it is great that you're encouraging your son. Some parents wouldn't and that would take away something that their child enjoys. I think the best you can do is to watch him when he's dancing and to remind him over and over not to try anything dangerous. I guess it's like anything. There's always that chance that something could happen but chances are it won't. Who knows. Maybe he'll be on So You Think You Can Dance or Dance Crew someday! I wish my son had kept it up because he was really (old school) good!
