First time traveller needs advice!

Australia

I've never been out of Australia before and I plan to go to the States in January. It is short notice but I need to know what I need besides a passport and a visa and how long it takes to get each. I guess I also need travel insurance too... So I'd like to hear from experienced travellers about what else there is I may need to organise? Thanks!

It sounds like you have everything very well organized. I travel between Canada and the USa on a regular basis, and have spent more time on airplanes last year than on the ground! LOL You have mentioned everything that I take with me, besides the personal things that I want to take on the trip. You are very well prepared.

Your comment made me feel much more relaxed! I've hardly been anywhere in Australia and I've got 3 months to plan my first overseas trip!

I live in the United States and have never travelled outside of it either. I'm not sure how long it takes to obtain the passport or visa. I think it would happen for you fairly quick though, so you would not have to wait long for it.

I've never had travel insurance - but I have health insurance so maybe I just never felt that I needed more. You can probably find anything you forget here easily - unless its presciption meds. let us know where you are travelling here in the states and maybe some of your mylot friends can try and meet ya!

I would take your medications and any medical equipment that you are using. When taking your medications you need to have them as a carry on. My sister who works for American Airlines told me never to let prescription medications in your check on luggage because medications get stolen out of suite cases. Where are you going to visit? I would recommend seeing Yosemite National Park if you are in CA and have time. I live 2 hours from there if you need a guide I use to live there. I would apply for a passport ASAP because in the USA it takes several months to get a passport after 911. Enjoy your trip.

I think that you should apply for a passport straight away and then a visa after that. Medical expenses are very expensive in the USA so very good cover on your travel insurance would be great. I advise thinking about reading a good quality travel guide book because the USA is large so it would be superb to have an idea of where you plan to go. I have been to California three times and to Hawaii once. I think Seattle would be a lovely city to go to. Also Boston, New York and Washington DC would be interesting places to go I think. I think that you should carry you passport and currency in a money belt hidden under your clothes. In January the weather would be quite cool to cold in most of the states except in tropical Florida and Hawaii. So I advise packing some warm clothes. I take a backpack and this suits me. Some other people take a suitcase or hold all bag. How long are you planning to travel for? Have you booked from flight there yet? Good luck planning your trip.
