I will be out of work soon, and I will have a little time on my hands, I am not looking for any work soon, especially hard labor. I have 4 more years before I can draw a check from the government. I have always wanted a pet. I will have time to spend with one now and take care and train it. What type of pet do you prefer? Any suggestions? What is your preference?

i love cats - a beautiful graphic my good friend, raven, made for me.
first, of course, i'm partial to cats. there is no housebreaking. there is no mess...save for a litter box. you don't have to exercise a cat. i prefer dry food for animals and that's less expensive, too. if you visit the ASPCA, they are neutered. if you go to petfinder.com, you can put in your zipcode and search for a pet. they usually have cautionary notes if needed. like: is shy, doesn't like children, etc. start thinking of a name....the fun part, for me! and, please keep us updated...post a discussion: name my pet!

I also suggest a dog. I love dogs and cats but dogs are just so affectionate. Plus they don't leave kitty litter all over the floor, or cat hair on your clothes.;-) I have a Yorkshire terrier; she's easy to take care of, VERY loving and very smart!

Good Questions - for want to be pet owners
It really depends on what you're looking for. You have to consider the disposition of each animal be it a cat or a dog. For example, if you're active and want an active dog then I'd suggest a Rat Terrier for they're so energetic however, if you want something that laid back and docile (but hardheaded) I'd say a Bassett Hound. Also, how much time do you have to spend with the pet be it a cat or a dog. Some have long hair and will need brushing and some have short hair... it really depends on what you want and have time for. If you give me an idea of what you're looking for then I can try to guide you in the right direction. I know there's a questionnaire on the net somewhere but I haven't been able to find it but it asks all kinds of questions on what you'd prefer so it narrows down to what you're looking for. ARG!! Also another mylotter pyewacket may have some suggestions as well so I'll be sending her the link to your discussion so she'll know about it. Good luck!!

I suggest a cat. They are a wonderful pet and they don't require a lot of care beyond food, water and a place to relieve themselves They are happy when you pay attention to them and happy if you don't. How can you go wrong with a pet like that?

A chihuahua! until i got mine, i never thought i could get such loving devotion and joy, laughs etc. from an animal. as long as you train it patiently and lovingly it will be the best pet you ever had and i've had almost every kind you can think of. just make sure it gets out when need be.

Hi Chevee, Well you deserve a rest anyway, I think a little dog or cats? I have two cats and I adore them, I don't have problems with them as the are too soppy and gentle. My friend retired last year but she already had her dog anyway so she does spend a lot of time with her dog but its up to you. Good luck. Hugs Tamara

I like cats and dogs. Especially dogs. There are different kinds that can be easily trained. A dog can be your constant companion and will love you unconditionaly. I love having a dog to talk to when I'm lonely. She may not be able to talk back to me but she's always there. Cats are fun too. When they are young, they are very playful. They can be house trained with a litter box.

I think fish is a good choice. You don't have to spend lots of time taking care of them. Whereas when you see your fish swimming in the aquarium, you will feel very relaxed. I've heard that it will reduce your blood pressure. If you have to go out for some time, it's OK to leave the fish at home. Besides, you don't have to feed the fish regularly. Compare to it, you have to find someone to take care of your cat and dog. I love China

You have some good advice here, but there is a reason that cats are the number one pet in America. Cats are affectionate, humorous, sweet and loving. They are not noisy and demanding. No one barks in my house with 4 cats. I have a warm motor purring in my lap whenever I want. All a cat requires is food, water, shelter, love and a litter box. It is no trouble to scoop a litter box. You don't have to walk in the rain and snow and ice. I suggest that you go to a shelter and adopt an adult cat or better yet, a pair of adult cats. Kittens are way too rambunctious and mischievous. If your shelter does fostering, the foster family can give you a good idea about the cat's temperament. An adult will not need baby shots nor neutering. I hope you have a wonderful time with your new cats.

Hi there! Well, if you want to have a pet you must consider first how much time you can give in taking care of it. Taking care of a pet requires patience and responsibilities. Several factors you must consider in having a pet is space, time and finances. Dogs and cats are the most popular animals to have as a pet. Dogs require lots of maintainance especially food and bathing. They need a larger space such as a yard for them to roam. They also need exercise and so you must be able to have lots of time walking them. Not like when you take care of a cat. Cats are much simpler to care for and they are smaller than dogs unless you will prefer a smaller breed of dog. Fish and birds too are good as pets. They won't take so much of your time taking care of them. You don't have to bathe them too hehe. The food is also less expensive and doesn't require so much space in the house. I wouldn't be able to give you any suggestion on what kind of pet you would consider to buy. It really depends on you likeness but I hope I am able to give insights on the requirements of having a pet. By the way, I have 2 dogs. Ciao!

Hey chevee, You have to be really sure that you want a pet before you make the committment. You will have to devote alot of time and be really sure that you are ready to get the right kind of pet and once you do that you will keep it and treat it right and give it a good home and all the attention and love that it needs. Having a pet is like having a child. They need alot of care and sometimes they need to go to the vet to have shots and sometimes they get sick. You really have to want to take care of a pet and invest the time and money before you go and get one. I suggest if you are really serious that you get a cat. They are the easiest to take care of because they use a litter box and can be trained to do that. I would also suggest to keep it inside so it is safe. I have 2 cats and I love them more than anything. I have had cats for 27 years now. These are my 4th and 5th cats. They are alot of work, but they are worth it.

I've got a cat and it works really well for me, i live alone so he is great company, but because cats are quite independent it doesn't matter so much if i work long shifts, or go away for a few days, as long asi have someone to go in a feed him he;s fine. I think dogs are good pets too (i've never had one as they make me nervous and i've never had the time to give them the attention that they deserve), they really do become part of people's families, but they need lots of exercise and attention, as well as the training when they are puppies, so i guess it depends on how much time you have! I also loved it when my mum had birds when i was younger, i think if i didn't have my cat i'd have some sort of parrot! xxx

Yes .. Pets also need attention like our other family members .. but in today era it is not possible to spent long time with your pets. But we should spare some fix time to spent that time with our pet. so your pet will wait for full day that that fix time you will come to him and some momements with him/her. they also need medical attention. good food entertainment refreshments attention security

Either a dog or a cat. Cause i think when you are really attached to them, they are just like friends. They could greet you at the door step whenever you're home. Personally i would prefer a dog. :)

I have both cats and dogs. And truthfully they are both work. Dogs are nice because you can let them outside to toilet. But then you get to clean up the yard. Cats are good because they use a litter box, but then you clean it too. LOL Cats are usually more aloof, and you don't have to walk them. They will also be quieter because a dog may bark more than you wish. But if I had to make a choice now (and didn't already have pets) I'd choose a cat. Because you can even leave a cat for a weekend with extra food and water, but you can't do that with a dog.

I suggest getting a chichuahua, they are small, adorable and extremely loyal companions. They even fit under your bed blankets and will sleep with you at night guarding you! They will guard you from intruders or at least let you know somthings going on. They are very smart! I have 5 of my own in my home, and I love them all very much. You get attacked to them very easily! I hope this helps :)
