A little bit of a sad day at Foxy's house

Nothing major in the grand scheme of things, more of a sentimental sadness. The guys just left to haul our old, old truck to the scrap yard. This was the truck s/o was driving when we first started dating and where we both confessed our true feelings for each other. It was the truck that once caught on fire and was saved only by some handfuls of snow and the quilt made for my daughter by her great grandmother (the quilt survived with only a few burn marks but my daughter was terrified of it for years, thinking it would some how burst into flames or give her nightmares) This was the truck that blew flames out the exhaust pipes which was amazingly hilarious to the guys when they'd pass a car at night and purposely dump the clutch to see how scared the other driver got. It was the truck that popped out of gear and drove itself past my house and into a snow bank the winter that I was pregnant with our first son and s/o had just had hernia surgery...neither of us could have chased it down and we couldn't shovel it out either. In less than an hour it will be speared by a fork truck and dropped in a pile to await it's turn through the crusher. It was a good truck. It's death was delayed long enough. It's motor is in the truck being used to haul it, in an odd bit of irony. So that's the deal about my day and my little eulogy for the truck. Feel free to answer any or all of the quirky questions I came up with to discuss... How sentimental are you? What was your most special vehicle? Do you have a special memory connected with a vehicle? Want to take a guess at how much money a 1981 3/4 ton Chevy truck with no motor will get from the scrap yard? Ever had a minor vehicle fire? Are you bored talking about a stupid, old, junk truck?

Hi foxy, I liked you sentimental stories about the truck. I think that they were very nice. You had some really fun and scary times in it and at least you have the memories and the kids to remind you of them. I never had a car so I don't know what it's like to see one get all crushed and stuff, but I can imagine how it might feel to have to give up something with lots of memories attached to it. I'm glad that you're finally getting a new one though that you can make all new memories in. Think of that instead so you don't feel so bad!

Thanks Opal! We've had quite a few different vehicles since this truck was on the road actually. It's been sitting in the yard looking all pathetic for going on 6 years! S/o just didn't want to get rid of it...I think he's regretting it now even, but we needed a little extra money for important bills so it had to happen. But I am getting a newer truck soon too! So I'm definitely excited about that. We just have a little bit more to catch up on with money and arrange for my friend that has it to haul it over here for us.

I am so sorry for your loss Foxy. I know losing an old friend like that can be traumatic and heartbreaking. You have so many wonderful memories to hold on to. Don't let anyone take them away from you or make you feel like it's not ok to feel sad about closing a chapter in your life. I remember my first car. My memories aren't so good. It was a K-car given to me by my grandmother. I wrecked it by hitting a deer on the way home from college for Thanksgiving trying to surprise my parents.

Hey at least it wasn't a Yugo! Dodge cars have a special place for me. I never had a K-car but two Shadows and they were the sweetest little things. I almost destroyed my first Shadow when I hit a deer but the insurance coughed up $1150 to fix it instead of totalling it (don't know why, my dad only paid $250 for it a year before). I'm sure your parents ended up REALLY surprised!

I'm sorry to hear that you are sad about getting rid of the truck, but it is cool that you got the $250 for it. How sentimental are you? I am not very sentimental at all. I do not hold onto things because of sentimental reasons at all. If I do not need it I get rid of it. What was your most special vehicle? I guess my most special vehicle would be the first one I ever bought and paid for myself. It was a 1998 Chevy Cavalier that I bought in Feb of 1998 brand new. I just got rid of it this past year. My sister drives it now. Do you have a special memory connected with a vehicle? Not really. I mean I remember things that have happened in certain vehicles, but no really special ones. Want to take a guess at how much money a 1981 3/4 ton Chevy truck with no motor will get from the scrap yard? I cheated and read the answer of $250 in another post already. I would have expected a little more too. Ever had a minor vehicle fire? Not my car, but one of my ex boyfriends had one. He had gotten something replaced(can't remember what) and somehow the guy that did it managed to get GAS mixed in with the OIL and his car caught on fire under the hood. It was winter and he was inside letting it warm up. When he went back outside it was in flames. Are you bored talking about a stupid, old, junk truck? Nope, not at all. It was not just a stupid, old, junk truck to you and so any stories you care to share about it are welcome.

That was a good eulogy for your truck, I'm sure your truck would have been proud to hear you speak so fondly of it. lol! I can't recall ever having such an attachment to any vehicle that I have ever owned. Most of my vehicles have been unreliable junk since day one and I didn't own them long before having to get another. I can recall becoming sentimentally attached to certain places or houses I have lived in though. I have no idea how much your truck is worth at the scrap yard, but I'll take a stab in the dark and guess $50 to $100? I'm probably way off. I did have a car catch on fire once. I was driving down the road in the piece of crap that I currently owned at the time when I had to stop and pull over because the car was slowing down on it's own and overheating. As I sat there, with the engine off, waiting for the car to cool down, I was looking out my windshield when all the sudden, I saw small flames shooting out of the hood! Scared, I instantly opened the door and jumped out of the car and backed away. Just a couple of minutes later, the fire grew to quite a large one. Needless to say, when all was said and down, the wrecker and the fire department were both called and that car was never driven again as everything under the hood and much of the rest of car was very badly burned or damaged from the fire. I remember that I was real tired that day and driving home from the job that I held at the time this happened. I was about to doze off and take a little nap while I waited for it to cool down. It was just before I closed my eyes that I seen the flames shoot out of the hood through my windshield. In hindsight, I am just grateful that I didn't fall asleep before I saw the fire, else I might not have been here today to talk about it!

Aww...I was sad for you just reading that! When you have a vehicle for a reasonable amount of time it really becomes part of the "family". My heart kind of drops when I go around the corner a friend wrecked our truck on so I understand. Partly because it was our first nice truck and partly because sop much changes in a year...last September he was the stupid kid that goofed off and destroyed out truck, this September he's trying to enjoy his last days in this country. He's deploying to Iraq in 4 days.
