As many of you know, I adopted 2 kittens earlier this year. I've had them on dry kitten food so far. They are now 5-6 months old. At what point should I change them over to dry cat food. I've already offered them a can of cat food. Dayum what a fight. They share the dry food well. Can you tell me the BEST way to transition them from kitten food to cat food???

Hi LadyM, You can start feeding them adult cat food when they are one year old. You can continue feeding them kitten food for now because they still are kittens. They won't mind. They are still growing and their stomachs are still kind of sensitive so I would wait just a little longer before I change their diet.

Our vet told us not to switch our cats over to adult food until they were 1. You should try to give them each wet food daily, it is good for their kidneys and provides more nutrition tan just the dry food can provide. Also, stay away from dry foods that contain any preservatives or artificial colors, ash, or fillers (ie meat by products, too much grain)

Cats love Fancy Feast - Never met a cat that didn't love Fancy Feast!!!
Thank you, you have given me more info than the vet...and I've paid her over $300.00. Think you missed your calling???

We have 6 kittens that are 10 weeks old and they eat dry food. I believe a kitten becomes a cat at 1 year.

My Baby Romeo - This is my baby Romeo. He's the oldest yet the smallest of the 2 but is also the most muscular. He's the mischievous one too!!!
Thank you!!! I think they are ready but just didn't want to rush my babies into adulthood!!!

Hi there Lady Marissa ! As some folks already said - 1 year should be the natural age - but the perfect person to tell you this is a vet (that might even want to check them out as well). My former kitty liked dry food even when he was 3 months old for example, so that's why i think you need a professional's opinion.

The Humane Society gave me a bag of kitten food when I adopted them so that's what I've been feeding them. They seem to stay hungry so I thought that if maybe if I added regular cat food to their diet their little tummies might feel fuller!!! I just didn't want to start too soon. So far, every time the vet has seen them, she's charged me $100.00. I don't have a spare $100.00 right now.

I've heard that cats should have canned food and not dry. I'm not sure why, unless it has to do with the ash content. Higher ash content can lead to feline urinary syndrome or whatever it's called; crystals in their bladder, much like our kidney stones. I used to have dry food for my cat available 24/7, but feed him canned food twice a day. Anyway, I know for a fact that they say to feed dogs puppy food for 2 years, but I think that's just an advertizing gimmick. I'd say after a year, start to mix in the adult cat food with the kitten food. A little at first, then more, then more until all you have is the adult food. I'm not quite sure about the age, but I AM sure about how to change over to a new food. It should always be done slowly to avoid digestive upset.

Thank you tamara. I've read several sites about this. One says 6 months old & one says 1 year old. Mixing will be no problem. They just seem to stay hungry & I was hopping that adding some adult food to the mix might fill up their lil tummies!!!

you could probably transistion them to adult food now I have raised MANY cats on adult food, just because I couldn't feed all my adult cats kitten food. I have even raised kittens on adult diet food - with NO ill effects - or as my vet said, I was giving a high quiality of food, and they were getting to eat as much as they wanted - it was better than being on the street eating whatever. get the other food and start adding it into the kitten food - gradually increasing the amount until they are only eating the adult food - figure out how much kitten food you have left and if you don't have very much, pick up some more and start with like 10% and increase it until its done.

I forgot to include the timeline. The cat show groups call a kitten a cat at 8 months - thats when they have to stop showing them in the kitten classes. Most cats have 95% of their growth by a year, but it does actually take another full year for most breeds to get their full size and weight - with Mainecoons and Norwegian Forest cats it can take up to 4 years.

I suppose the easiest thing would be to mix half and half for a while and see what happens. Does it say anything on the kitten food about the age kittens should be when they consume it? I've never had cats (unfortunately, because I love them) but I'd imagine if you put the cat food on the bottom and sprinkled the dry kitten food on top, the kits will get to try the cat food and you can gradually decrease the amount of dry kitten food.
