What do you do when your employer makes you feel worthless?

I work as a caretaker and recently a new head has taken over. The previous head seemed to value my input and opinion on any building work going on within the setting. The new head doesn't even let me know that contractors are going to be on site. The new head hardly speaks to me and doesn't even share information that is relevant to my role. Was I spoiled by the old boss? Should I 'know my place'? Has anyone ever made you feel this way?

Hi Nannacroc, your new head sounds like one of those insecure bosses/managers. They often feel threatened, if their staff could handle a job independently or better than them. Keeping the staff out of the loop is one of the ways they try to control the situation. I might be wrong; give your new head time to get used to you, and for you to understand him/her better. Communicate often with him/her on your projects; get yourself involved. Good luck!

Oh mercy, I sure do feel for you! I've been in the same position, and it's definitely difficult. It's always one of those 'danged if you do/danged if you don't' things. No, you were NOT spoiled by your old boss...your old boss had a better pulse on how to manage people and their jobs. A boss like that makes the job frustrating! Always keep in mind that you are a good employee, and that some bosses haven't the true skills necessary to make a good job of it (for their companies and their employees.) When my one boss was like that I'd silently remind myself of 'The Peter Principle': 'The theory that employees within an organization will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent." Your response reminded me of something my dad used to say about incompetent people getting 'kicked upstairs'. He meant they were eventually promoted to where they could do least harm. Thank you, as you can imagine this situation is not doing a lot for my self confidence.

Do you mean the new Head or do you mean the 'acting' one? If you mean the new one, then you should have a word with her and tell her how you feel, a good employer will try to ensure that all their staff are happy. (I know, I was one!) If you mean the acting head, don't worry about that, she'll be leaving soon anyway.

Well, it shouldn't matter what she thinks then, she's only 'pretend' anyway. :)

It's the 'acting one'. I haven't spoken much to the new one yet.

Sounds like a tough situation. If you value the position then tolerate it for now. If you have a chance to give a tip on "what would make your position better". Tell them about that person's behavior. Best wishes as that's a rough spot to be in.

Thank you. I feel bad about telling others as it's a bit like teling tales.

Whenever I feel like my opinion doesn't matter or they don't need me, I walk out. If they feel like they can do it on their own, it is fine with me. I will just concentrate on the present job that I am doing and make sure I will be able to do it perfectly. If they will blame me that their project failed because I did not cooperate then I will make them see that it is their fault their project failed. In every project, cooperation and teamwork is important. If they don't value this, then surely their project will go down the drain. If I feel like I am not happy anymore then it is the time to quit.

I just dont mind them. If there is someone who knows myself and my capacity as an employee it is myself. I know myself better that that of my employer. Im a good employee and i work and perform well in the office or in my workplace. Im a team player. In this world you will meet people that doesnt like you and people that want to make you down, but you dont have to pleased them to appreciate you , just mind your own self and better improve yourself. This people are very necessary in your life to make you strong from your challenges and battles in life.
