Have you ever discovered that you were allergic to something, and unaware of it?

I have. My doctor put me on a medication that contained Sulfur in it. It was like an Antifungal Antibiotic. This medicine gave me no trouble for a whole week. But, the next week, my skin was itching like crazy.. There were no bumps, so I stopped taking them.. I have just realized that I am allergic to something, but just finding out about it? Has this ever happened to you, where you just found out that you were allergic to something, but had no clue that you were, until you came into contact with it. Share your thoughts!

It's true! Allergies can develop at any age. And, sometimes you can be allergic to something and not even realize it, until you get into contact with it. I used to get really bad contact dermatitis when I was a girl. It went away after awhile. But my daughter has the same issue, so I have to avoid all harsh bleaches and detergents on her bed linen and clothes or anything she might make contact with. As for allergies, I did not know that I was allergic to cut grass until the neighbors across the street mowed their big meadow sized lawn last year. I think they have some type of weeds over there that I'm allergic too. The field had not been mowed in a very long time and it stirred up all kinds of allergens into the air. Ever since then, mowed grass makes me get hay fever allergies, itchy eyes, runny nose, groggy, migraines and more! Maybe it was the pregnancy that brought on the allergies. Never was allergic before then.

Yes, I am wondering what triggered my result of allergies too. My grandmother once told me that I was allergic to the green grass in the back yard. I believe that she was right, because, I used to play in it when I was young. I loved rolling around in it all the time. I had small bumps on my skin from it. And I did itch quite a bit too. So, I guess granny was right. I was allergic to grass without me knowing, until I came into contact with it.

Yes, I went for a summer to pan gold and had a down sleeping bag. I broke out in hives and sneezing and was like that for the whole summer. I thought I was allergic to down but it turns out that it's the first time my dog slept in the same bed as me and I was actually allergic to him! I took allergy pills after that, I could give up the down sleeping bag but Hector was too precious and warm to give up!

I was sick from 7th grade thru college and only after graduating that I learned that reason I was sick all the time was because I'm allergic to corn protein. When I cut corn protein out of my diet, the daily headaches went away. Is it any wonder my grades were poor in school if I felt like cra.. shi.. bad all the time?

Corn oil is almost pure corn protein, corn meal/flour and corn starch also have corn protein in them. Corn syrup is sugar, but can contain some bits of corn protein so I try to avoid it.

Yes, getting rid of the corn protein seemed to help very much. By the way, what is this?

Yes, it is a good thing. I dislike any kind of seafood, except for regular fish and small shrimp. I would not be surprised if I started to break out if I ate other sea foods that I disliked.

yeah. in the 90s, i want to a college fair, and ate a lot of junk food. then i came home and ate lots of potato chips. i woke up the next day with a rash on my face and tightening in the neck/throat area. i retraced my steps to list everything i ate, and tried them, one by one, and finally realized i was allergic to Lays potato chips. so, i stopped eating them. besides that, i dont think i am allergic to anything else.

My six year old had chronic ear infections in her first year of life. She always took Amoxil, Omnicef, or Zithromax. She stopped having them at age one and didn't have another for six months or so. When she got an antibiotic for it, she got Amoxil again which was about the 7th time she had taken it. Within 24-48 hours of starting it she got a large pimple. Within 5 hours of getting the pimple she was litterally covered from head to toe with them. Within 6 hours they had all connected. Come to find out they were target lesions and they were an allergic response to the penicillin. The next time she needed an antibiotic, since allergic to penicillin, they gave her omnicef which she had had approx 4 other times. Within a few hours of recieving her first dose of that she was covered with the target lesions again. There is a tiny link between the penicillins and the cephalosporins and a 5% chance of having an allergy to both. My daughter was in the 5% and was clearly reacting faster and stronger with each exposure. Now and for the rest of her life, if she recieves anything with either of those things in it, it could kill her. We were very fortunate to have recognized it so quickly the second time or it could have been lethal then. Unfortunately, those ingredients are some of the most potent newer antibiotics made and my daughter is prone to getting cellulitis which is an affection of the skin cells that could easily and quickly go into the blood stream and be very dangerous. Since she cannot take these commonly given antibiotics, they have to treat her with clindamicin. It is a very old, very potent antibiotic and happens to be the worst tasting one ever made. It requires taking alot of it for a long time to get the same affect as a shorter dose of the others. The last time she got cellulitis, she had to take this and another and was taking a total of 17 teaspoons of wretched putrid concoction for 10 days straight and it was a terrible ordeal. We get very nervous now and check her frequently to try and prevent the need for any antibiotics now.

When I was still in college, I was advised by a doctor to take this cotrimoxaxole. After I guess 30 minutes, my face and body started to get all red and bloated. I was allergic to it. I never took that tablet again.

Yes, I don't blame you. Just as soon as I found out that the Sulfur my doctor had me on was making my skin itch, I quickly stopped taking that too.

Thankfully, I never experienced any allergies eversince. I really don't know if I have one since I never had any bad reaction from anything that took or was in contact with from food to clothing. I would consider myself lucky. Well, I am not sure but I think a person can be tested for allergy even when that person is still a baby. Some parents usually do that to know in advance if their child has any allergy or reactions to food and other stuff. Best to you!

Yes, I guess this would be an advantage. At least you can prevent in advance possible allergic attack since you will know already what are the things that could cause allergy to you.

I was taking a medication for over two weeks when I started breaking out in itchy hives and I stopped taking it. I found out it was an additive in the generic form of the medication that was bothering me as I took the original version (or Brand name) of the medicine and have not had a problem since (its been over 7 months). Another thing is finding out I was allergic to cats. That was suprising to me because I had a cat my father adopted for me and never had a problem with it. It was a short hair but I do not think that mattered. I just know that I pet a friends cats about two years after that (my father took care of the cat when I moved out) and my eyes were Bloodshot and itching and burning like fire and the reaction i have has been the same ever since. Sometimes I will intentionally pet a cat just to see if my allergy went away, lol, no luck. I also sneeze uncontrollably--just one after another, and as soon as I move away from the cat it slows down but it takes awhile for my eyes and the itching to go away.

Wow!!! Having an cat to be allergic of is very scary.. It is a good thing that you switched to the original brand. It seems that you are doing much better with this. Which is good. Take care..

You know, that is so funny you should say that about the medications. I often think about the name brand/generic debate and haven't came to a conclusion yet but I have friends and family that swear that the generic caused ill effects or was not as effective. It boggles me that they can market it as only a change in name brand when in fact it has a chemical change as well. It doesn't seem that they should be able to do that or at least claim that it is the same when it in fact is not. And my hubby grew up with cats without so much as a symptom. When we moved in together he was away from them for a few months and then we got a cat. He started reacting to them and hasn't stopped since. He can get brushed faintly with a cats tail and swell up in his face and have sinus problems almost instantly. It's very odd how our bodies can betray us this way... I personally react to sunlight with alot of sneezing...

As of now, I'm suffering for almost 2 weeks from my allergy.. i had already seek help from a doctor then he gave me a medicine for allergy but still there's no effect.. He is still finding the causes of my allergy.. 2 weeks ago only at my back has this allergy than it seems ants bite me but after how many days had passed the more it became itchy and now my whole body has an allergy.. Sometimes, I'm ashamed going to work since there are a lot of red spot in my neck and hands.. But I need to go to work, so I'll just used jacket so that I can somehow keep them.. This coming Saturday I will visit again to my doctor, I hope it will cure already because I really feel irritated..

Yes, I ma very sorry to hear this. I still have irritation too from the Sulfur that I was on. I hope that we both feel better very soon. Itching all day is no fun... I have been scratching myself for about five days because of the allergic reaction to my skin. I hope your doctor finds a cure for you.

That is good news! I had an allergy test too. I have a low count of allergies in many things. But I do have an 1% allergy in cedar and bark trees. I am allergic to a few tress that are on the outside.. I guess that why I was so surprised to find out that I was allergic to Sulfur. I never really thought that I could be allergic to anything, because I never really ever had side effects like that. Not up until now that is..

I found out the hard way that I am allergic to Codine. After having some major tooth work done, the dentist gave me a prescription for codine. I took the pills while my mouth was still numb from the novacaine. My face began to itch severely but I couldn't feel myself scratching because of the numbness and I ended up scratching a big sore on my face. I called my doctor and that's when it was determined that I shouldn't take codine.

Yes, in recent years I have discovered I am allergic to a few things. This discovery occurred because of a change in medications. My doctor was trying to find something to help me better. We also found a few things I am not fully allergic to but I do have a reaction to. Rather than take a chance of developing an allergy, we just discontinue that medication.

I found out I was allergic to alot of things as I was growing up. Cleaners, lotions, make-up, some fabrics, certain perfumes and some soaps. I end up with rashes, peeling skin, asthma problems, headaches, upset stomach or eye and nose irritation. These days I know what I'm allergic to so I'm more able to avoid them.
