I will usually turn it off unless I want to use it in less than an hour. If it's on hibernation, it's a waste of money (electricity bills), and may cause your computer to overheat and spoil fast (another waste of money). Hence, it's better to switch it off when not in use, it's just about say, 30-90 secs slower than switching it on as compared to hilbernation.

i think it will not take power in hibernation mode ,but in stand by it takes power.and it wont be working at all in hibernation.i usually hiberate and then switch off the UPS.that means no power is needed.and when i switch on it will save the time of start up.

yes you are right it is applicable to other things also .teelevisionsand other home appliances should be switched off properly or otherwise it is a contribution to global warming and also a wastage of energy. usually i am also not bothered of switching off the tv .some times i also forget to switch of after turn it to standby using remote control.

As long as your switch is on, you are wasting electricity and contributing to global warming, even if your computer is not on, this applies for every other things, television, handphone charger, whatsoever. =)

I always turn it off. leaving it on standby is just ridiculous. for a start, it can't be good for the computer. everything heats up during use, and I think it's necessary to allow the parts to have some time to cool down between uses. leaving it on all the time can only decrease the lifespan of the computer. by leaving it on you are costing yourself a lot of money in electricity. 8% of the electricity used in the home is used by products left on standby, not in use. on standby, an appliance uses 90% of the energy it uses when in use. with this in mind, I am actually really bothered by the fact that manufacturers still make products with a standby option, instead of just switching it off properly. if the option wasn't there, people wouldn't use it. and the environmental impacts of this waste of electricity are also a major issue. so actually, I think that there should be regulations against products being made with an option to be left on standby.

i also think like that .there should be some regulations to standby.the main product to be regulated according to me is televisions.we usually put it in standby mode using remote control.but forget to switch off it .(may be it is happening only to me) .i always forget to switch of television.

I switch it off completely if I'm not planning on using it for a long amount of time. Or I just leave it ON if I'm going AFK. Most of the times my computer system is ON and I rarely switch it off. bourne

Always turn it off, especially if you are always connected to the internet. It draws power even when in hibernation. And here is a thing I became painfully aware of recently when I bought a wireless mouse. I was burning thru batteries to the tune on changing them once a month. I realized that even though I had the computer turned off, I had not turned off the power strip and I was draining the battery on the mouse.

It depend, really. When i'm only planning to make a short leave, than i will put it on standby. When i think i didn't want to use it anymore, i will shut it down. Altough it only consume a little power during stand by mode, but its still consume.

same thing. and a product on standby actually uses 90% of the energy it uses when it's on.
