How much are we as human contributing to global warming through methane gas ?

I read an article that basically said that animal are a contributing factor causing global warming due to the methane gas they produce . That being true, how are we helping it's progression by having over 4 billion people on the planet ? And could restriction on the amount of children we have help reduce its effect .
