Does anyone know why it costs so much more to buy healthy, whole foods than processed foods? My family could go through 4lbs of strawberries in 1 day, and thats if only the kids eat them. But I can't buy them everyday bcz for that amount it costs a minimum of $8. It seems to me that processed foods should cost more bcz they are PROCESSED, they have to alter them, do something to them etc...whole foods are just taken out of the ground, picked off a tree etc...so why are they so much more expensive?

I don't really know why there more expensive either. It does not make since to me. If you were to go to a farmers market instead of a grocy store it would be cheaper.

I have gone to the local farmers market (and I live in a farming community) and found it to be about the same. I am so frustrated with this issue. If they would make healthier foods cheaper, wouldn't that make healthier people, and wouldn't that bring down healthcare costs? It makes so much more since. ugh!

Yes it is very sad that people have to live on the stupid Easy Mac garbage than real foods.

Most processed foods are not as high quality as the fresh ones you can buy at the super market or farmers market. They are processed with stuff added for shelf life and to improve the taste. Since they're not the highest quality to start with and they aren't picked over very well, and the processing is all done by machines which cuts down on the time they cost less. It still doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's the way it is. As for some processed foods like the grains to make pastas and breads etc., what is processed out of them like the bran and wheat germ, are sold at a much higher price than the processed product and that's where the companies make their money.

So they take the healthy stuff out and resale it for a higher price as a "whole" food. Nice. Gotta love big business!
