How can I stop my lips from being hard and dy?

I have this habit of licking my lips to maintain their wetness. I do this all the time whenever I am and whatever it is I am doning. I would not be exaggerating if I say that I wet my lips with my tongue every minute. Even other people noticed and commented that what I am doing is not pleasant. So, I decided to cut this bad habit. I have observed that after I put a stop to this mannerism, my lips became hard and dry, and specially now when I am exposed to strong wind as when I'm travelling. How can I stop my lips from being hard and dry? Is there medicine to take? If so, what is it and where can I buy it? Are there any tips that you can share to me so that I can finally put a top to this bad habit of mine?

I am a smoker and because of it My lips went black, During winters they become hard and dry too. So I think your problem is somewhat like me. Try this out, its really very simple and dosen't harm in any sense. Apply milk cream on your lips and leave it for 20 minutes. Do this twice a day in a week you will notice the change. Lips will be softer, and will become pink. It helped me. Give it a try. All the best. God bless.

What kind of milk cream did you use? I'm interested in this milk cream. I'm not a smoker and I don't have black lips, I don't have dry lips either but my lips are pale looking. If I don't wear a lip gloss or a lipstick people would think that I am sick cuz of the color of my lips. That's why I became interested with the effects of milk cream on you. May I ask what kind did you use? Or what brand to be specific. Thanks!

Hi, when I said milk cream. I meant plain cream of milk which comes on it after you boil it. Try it out. It really works.

Drink more water. Lack of some kind of Vitamin in your body, or an unbalanced diet can make you lick your lips. And of course it's bad habit for you. If I were you, I would spread something bitter on my lips and when I couldn't help licking them, the bitterness would make me stop.

Using a lipstick containing calendula or camomile before you sleep, it really can work. Good luck.

i share your pain. licking your lips can actually cause them to dry out as well. drinking a lot of water in general will keep your body hydrated. depending on your area, your lips might need just constant treatment. i like those basic lip balms. SoftLips is a good brand i liked to use and of course the classic ChapStick as well. those come in different intensities and are probably one of the best for seriously chapped lips. what i like to do is every night before i sleep i would place Vaseline on my lips, a heave does and spread them all around and go to sleep. i would wake up with them nicely hydrated and i would just have to keep them hydrated. also, if you have a lot of excess dry skin on your lips i saw a product (from Mary Kay) which yo can use to exfoliate the skin off your lips and will keep them soft. i wanted to get it but it was too expensive. you might be able to find something similar at the store or something.

Licking the lips make it more dry because the saliva does not really moisturize (and saliva is an enzyme of sort), thus, you have to bear in mind that licking it makes it drier and the best way is to put on lip balm.

Just get yourself a very moisturized lip balm and drink plenty water to keep your lips in moisture. I think these two ways are the most effective methods in keeping the moisture on our lips. Just keep in mind, water actually helps a lot in preserving the moisture not only for our lips but also our face. Good luck.

I use nivea lip balm. My lips get chapped and bleeds when we travel. Here in the Philippines my lips are usually in this state during landtrips, where we stay in the airconditioned cars for a long time. Then out to meet the heat. Then stay in hotel with very good airconditioners, take a hot bath...that is how my lips start to break and bleed.this happens all the time. but in Indonesia-it was not only my lips,my nose kept bleeding.HOt hot hot. In Bangkok, tourist are treated well, they give out cold towelettes. But still its very hot. I hate going to Baguio last week of January. We do this yearly. It is so cold up there,we stay for 3 to 4 days, then when we come down, reaching Pangasinan all the way to Manila would mean chapped lips.Huhuhu.

all you have to do is to put moisturizer on it...a lot of stuff available to help you with your problem. First is the lip balm, you can bring it anywhere and anytime. If you think that your lips get dry put a lip balm everytime its dry. Secondly, use petroleum jelly. Its the best among moisturizer i have used to. I put in the morning before i put lipsticks and at night before i go to sleep and let it overnight. After few days you will notice a better difference.

I think that there is more to it than mere habit. There must be some physiological basis for the dryness. You could do a search on the topic of lip dryness. Maybe someone has found a solution somewhere. Cheers!!

i find that by putting lip balm on i will not lick my lips because i hate the taste of the lip balm. i have a bad habit of licking my lips too and they should be chapped sooner rather than later now that it has started to get a bit chilly so i have the lip balm close at hand. i keep one at my desk, one in purse and one in my kitchen so i have no excuse for not using it.

Use lip balms or lip gloss, avoid licking your lips with your saliva, it can worsen the dry lips. Saliva is not the answer.

I think,in this regard don't use a petroleum jelly,it will darken your lip color. Instead you can use lip balm or lip gloss, and keep wearing it every 10 minutes interval. Before going to bed, you should apply lip guard creme, you can get it from a medical store.

Licking your lips is not a good thing. It may damage your lips and you wil look awful. Drink plenty of water, eat more fruits. Apply butter on your lips when you are at home and you can use a lip balm and Lip gloss while at work. Try these tips and let me know what happened.

I( have extremely dry lips myself. When I was working, I had my lip balm and lotion on my desk. Sometimes, when I wear chapstick, it makes my lips peel even more it seems. But I need to wear it anyway. Wetting your lips only makes the dryness worse. I know it seems like when you lick them, they're not so dry anymore, but that only lasts for a few good seconds for me.

licking your lips will only make your lips drier than they already are. i suggest the best thing for you to do is use a lip balm/moisturizer with and SPF of 15 which is what i use daily and i never have a problem with dry lips.
