When shopping for gifts, do you sometimes end up keeping stuff for yourself?

When I shop for gifts, especially during Christmas, my criteria would be: (1) cute! (2) my friend likes it (3) I like it Sometimes however, I would end up liking the present so much that I decide to keep it for myself. I would then have to get either another one or something else for my friend.

I've had on occasion kept a gift or two for myself. I usually look for gifts that the recipients might like but then I would end up liking them myself. But lately, I've been good at not doing this. I keep telling myself that if I'm able to selflessly give the gift that I want myself to another person, then I really do care for that person. It's almost like being very happy that the gift goes to someone you love and at the same time, it breaks your heart to let go of something you want for yourself. I think a good tip would be to make sure if they have at least one more of that item in the store's supply so that everyone's happy.

Wow, congratulations to you then! Unfortunately, I think it's the opposite for me. Before, I would pick out a gift for a friend, and although I would really like to keep it for myself, I would resist the temptation and I won't even go out to buy another one for myself. I guess I sort of regressed LOL.

Hahah yeah, I would end up shopping for myself too. I would see something my friend would like and I also like, and so I would get 2. Saves time as I won't have to go back to the store to get another one!

Actually, I have the same problem too! And that's why I devised my criteria.

I only do that with one of my friends as we have very similar tates and although it's easy to buy for her, it's a wrench to give the gift and yes a few times I've kept what I bought and had to buy something else.

Haha I also have a similar experience with my best friend. We like the same stuff and I have kept a few gifts that were intended for her. It's funny because we think alike when buying presents for each other. One Christmas, I was in the mall and found this cute item that I wanted to get for her. I didn't buy it right away, but I went to look at other things first. When I came back to get the item, it was gone! So, I just went and got her something else. When we exchanged gift though, I really laughed out loud when she handed me my Christmas present, as it was the exact same thing I was going to get for her! She was the one who the item that I wanted to get for her!

That is so funny. I was thinking about this a few minutes ago. I went on vacation and bought everyone presents I liked. Now, I look at the presents and think that I will like them more than the people I bought them for. I have a few months to decide. Would you appreciate kitchen towels and potholders? I think they're beautiful, but maybe my family will consider my gifts very strange.

Shame on me, I remember doing that one Christmas. I had bought the cutest Pooh Bear for my Goddaughter. She was not even a year old yet. I looked at that bear and looked at the bear, then I decided to keep it for myself. I am a big collector of teddy bears. My thought pattern to convince myself to keep it, was that she was too young and would not really appreciate it.

Hahah I do that a lot! After shopping I would usually inspect the stuff I bought and after looking and looking at them, I would start thinking "hmmm, I think I want to keep this and this..." LOL

I have bought things for myself like this before. I get something for someone else and then later decide that I want one so I go out and get another.

The criteria for me to look for a gift is same like yours but the priority is slightly different: 1. my friend like/need it 2. Pretty/cute/special 3. I like it. And yes, sometimes some gift that I had bought ends up to be mine! In such cases, I would need to go out and look for a new gift for my friends. However, I have changed now I think. I have no longer keeping the gift for myself as I know most of the time I do not need them as much as my friend. ;p
