Many people are baffled and upset that Walmart is eliminating their layaway. Have you ever or do you use layaway? Are you angered, disappointed, indifferent? What are your thoughts and how do you think it will affect Walmart's business?

I agree. When my hubby and I bought our first house. I put tons of stuff on layaway at Walmart and TJMaxx. Now that I have a son, layaway would have been useful for Christmas shopping. I think a lot of people are going to be affected.

That is true and it sounds like that is a big reason so many stores have or are doing away with it.

Why do you say that? I have seen other people on forums and such saying not to shop at walmart but I don't know why. Is there something going on?

IT MIGHT HURT THEIR SALES SOME BUT THE REALITY THEY ARE SITTING ON THE COSTS OF THOSE GOODS WHILE THEY ARE THERE AND IT IS PROBABLY EATING INTO THEIR PROFITS. IT IS PROBABLY SMART FOR THEM TO DO IT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE BUT FROM A CUSTOMER PERSPECTIVE IT'S NOT SO GOOD.

I work at Wal-mart and I think it is wrong. i knwo it was a company chocie and its suppsoe to help get rid of trailers and stuff. I am sorry no one can afford a 2000 tv without layaway. Christmas was a big time for layaway. Alot of us wish we still had it. The company sed alot of people now use credit cards and buy gift cards. Well they really want peopel to get a Walmart credit card see.

what stops you from just saving the money until you can afford it?

That is such a shame. Many people, myself included, use layaway because I don't want to open a credit card. Why is our society so accepting of living above our means and being in debt. Credit card companies count on things like this and it is sad.

Nothing, however, if it is an item that could sell out or be discontinued, you ran the chance of it not being available once you have the money saved up. This is why so many people utilize layaway during the holidays.

I don't understand the point of layaway.

But you don't get the item until it's paid for, right? So why not just save the money up in your bank account, or a cookie jar or wherever and then when you have enough for the item go buy it?

I think it is great for people who need or want something but don't have the money at the time to buy it outright. It sure beats using a credit card, in my opinion. At least once you get your item you are not in debt afterwards.

There is the chance that what you want may be gone, especially around the holidays. If you put it on layaway, the item is held until it is paid off. There is the piece of mind that you have the item off the shelf and it is there once you pay it off. You could be saving for a month or two, go back to buy it and find that it is gone.

One of the biggest reasons for the elimination was the amount of inventory they had unclaimed, people would pay a little bit on it and it would sit in lay-a-way forever. Then after the time was up or whatever the peoeple would come back wanting to pay on it or get their money back, etc. Too many people taking advantage of a system ruined it for everyone else.

my husband works for walmart, and what you said was a big reason for why they did away with it. To many people leaving things in lay away and then not picking them up.

True! When I was looking for items for our house, I used layaway at walmart because we didn't have the space to keep blinds and such in our apartment. Also, when I found a curtain I really liked, I wanted to make sure it was there when I needed it. The policy was that you had either 60 or 90 days and you had to pay at least once every 30 days. If you didn't they would restock your items and you would forfeit the items. Unfortunately, some people would put items on layaway evn though they couldn't afford to make payments on it. That is just silly! It's kind of like a credit card, if you can't afford to make payments, then don't do it!

It's a shame that people abuse the system and ruin it for others!

I was a bit disappointed when I saw that. But, it wasn't really surprising. All the other stores around here eliminated Layaway years ago because people just weren't using it as much and they still had to pay employees to run it.

That's funny! The one time I used layaway, for when I bought my first house, I could never find anyone back there working it! LOL

I don't use it but my familY does and did while I was growing up. I think it will affect Walmart in a negative way. I didn't even realize they were going to do this.

I agree. I think they will definitely see a drop in sales.

I have heard though that some of the higher management from walmart have gone to target. And Target is running the idea of getting a layaway system

Now THAT is interesting. Target would make many people happy if they had layaway.

I don't like it. The only time I used it was Christmas and I put the high dollar things on it and it was also hidden until close to Christmas. I did not have to worry about kids snooping.

I think you are right. Layaway booms at Christmas time. I for one don't have space to store large gift items.

I have used their layaway a few times and I don't like the idea of them quiting it. We have a Super WalMart and with the furniture and tv's, how are people supposed to buy them without layaway. I think it might hurt their business at Christmas time, I know people put gifts on layaway and now they can't, I think they will go elsewhere and WalMart won't get the business.
• United States
7 Nov 06
I think you're right. People may take their business elsewhere. Even if the store doesn't have layaway, they may shop elsewhere on purpose.

7 Nov 06
Not that I am so rich now, but when I was in my early twenties, I loved lay a way!!! It was an easy way for me to shop, and I alwayspaid stuff off. It was just a way to shop, I think Walmart taking this away is going to affect way too many people. In my opinion they should reconsider.

I hear ya! It seems as if they could maybe institute a stricter penalty for those people who put items on layaway and don't ever pick them up.

I've never used layaway before. Is it when you put a deposit and pay later?
• United States
7 Nov 06
Yes. You choose the items you want, the store keeps them and pay on them little by little until it is all paid off, then you take your items. Many people use it for holiday shopping. They find something they like and put it on layaway and pay it off before Christmas.
