Jeepney-related rants

As Filipinos, riding jeepneys is almost part of our daily lives. We are proud of it and consider it one of the treasures of our culture. But sometimes, we can't deny some things we could rant about that happens on the road and in the jeepney. But in particular, I'd like to point out some funny or annoying things inside the humble Filipino jeepneys. By the way, Gabe Mercado's show in ABS-CBN which used to air during Monday midnights pointed out some things too...and Bubble Gang as well (especially in "Sumbong Sumbong kay Bonggang Bonggang Bong Bong" segments). But frankly, some of the most simple things are left forgotten: 1) It's always okay to sit almost parallel to the seat as long as there's no one beside you. Isn't it annoying if it's already full in the jeep and the one next to you doesn't sit properly? 2) Okay, it's a bit spacy in the jeep now that some people dropped off. But then, even if you scoot far, the one next to you scoots next to you too and you're out of space again. 3) We have our own preferences on where to sit. But when it's full already, don't be so choosy and try to fit yourself to your favorite spot. It's a public transportation vehicle, you don't own it. Situation: A person will forcefully sit somewhere near the jeep entrace/exit/"door" and made like 5 people move over to give him/her space to sit. Oh come on! 4) If you have not intention to pass payment and change, do everyone a favor and don't sit right behind the driver or somewhere in the inner middle seat. Another situation, don't ask someone to hand over payment to the driver when that person is far away from the driver. One time, I was only 1 seat away from the door and a lady opposite me asked me to hand her payment to the driver. Oh my, does she not have legs? Much worse, does she not even think? That's just selfish thinking she could order someone around. I would understand if it was an old lady or a person who's not feeling well. 5) If you're OC or a germaphobe, I know I am, let's not make it an excuse not to pass payment and change. What I do is I bring hand sanitizer with me. 6) Someone drops off at Point A. Then as the jeepney starts to move again, another one asks to be dropped of to Point B, even if Point B is just like 5-10 steps away from Point A. Talk about laziness. And another thing, some people walk like in the park when about to ride the jeep. They waste other people's time and I hope they remember that it's a public transportation vehicle. They don't own it and they definitely don't own the time of the people in it. 7) Classic driver lines: - "on the right/left (even if someone's already sitting on like 1/3 of his/her buttocks" - "That seat's for 10 people (with the fact that one of the people sitting is obese)" 8) More improper sitting: - Almost everyone in a side sits diagonally. On one end of their side, a person is struggling to get seated during the whole travel. - No offense to some men: could you close it up a little? You're taking up space for 2. I think I ran out, I don't know if I forgot to include something. But anyway, do any of you find some of these true? Or are there other things you notice? Have a great day and happy Mylotting!

Hahaha! I must admit, you are quite observant and I can also relate with your observations. Another annoying thing I experience was sitting next to a long-haired woman. She didn't even bother holding her hair in place when we were riding so i literally had a mouthful of hair during that trip. But in spite of all these negative experiences and sentiments, I would still choose riding a jeepney over a taxi if given the chance to choose between the two. Like a typical Filipino, I would rather go to the cheaper means of transportation than hurting my pocket area (",).

Ayenacsi: True. I have wished for the same thing when I was seated next to a kikay girl who was obviously enjoying the wind, flipping her hair as if she's on a photo shoot.

And how about the jeepney drivers who makes it a point to stop and wait for nonexistent passengers every few meters or so, and just when you're running late or desperately want to get home fast, he decides to stop and refuel.

Haha. I have learned never to ride the jeepney when I'm in a hurry or something. As in, never ever.

Good observation! That's also one of the experiences we all get with jeepneys almost everyday. What's worse is that they would stop before crossing the intersection even if it's already 'go'. And then, the light turns red. And when the next green light comes up, the driver wasn't able to fetch any passengers (while those jeeps who went ahead during the previous 'go' got all the passengers on the other side) during that stop and then has no choice but to move on. That's around 3 minutes wasted. And as for refueling, why do they usually happen when we're in a hurry? What luck!

Well, i would like to add these two to your list... 1. People who doesn't even give a sign that they have no intention of riding the jeep... when in fact it has been waiting for several minutes for them... it is like these people take pride making the passengers and driver wait for nothing... 2. When drivers stop at every alley waiting for passengers to ride... this makes a 15 minute travel to something like 45 minutes... and when one is running late... this can be very painful...

Never ride a jeep when your running late. It would make you surely late. The two you've mentioned are also among my rants.

The one i hate about jeepney rides is the jeepney stereo, it is as if the driver is having some party and the stereo volume is set to highest it can bee. and when someone asked the jeepney to stop, the driver can't hear it. I remember once I asked the driver to lower the volume down, the driver acted as though he turn the nob but in fact he does not. And as you mentioned those rude people who hand over their fares to you, one time I was very pregnant, and I was sitting near the jeepney entrance and the jeepney has no other passenger just me and the other one, and this passenger really waited for me to hand over my fare and so she can hand it to me. the nerve! and I was so pregnant at that time!

I haven't been on a jeepney for years but this post brings back memories. I do hate it when a person asks me to hand the payment to the driver when it's just me and him/her and we're both as far away from the driver (#4). I also don't like it when drivers say there's still room for a few more passengers when the jeepney's already crammed with people in a hurry or late for something. And people, stop staring the whole ride at the person sitting across you. It's rude and makes me self-conscious. Lol.

I agree with you on being self-conscious when you're stared at the whole time you are riding the jeepney. But I found out, having parallel seats does have benefits after all. What if that one single day, you sit across you crush, wouldn't it be nice to spend the whole ride staring at each other as if you were the one ones inside the vehicle? That would be magical wouldn't it? (",)

i think you tell all that usually happen inside of public jeepney and its hard to deal with this kind of person, and the result is they will only annoy you that day,i really hate to meet this kind of people, they don't know how annoying are they.

8) Hear hear! This has been one of my problems. And when I get angry, I push their leg back. I don't know, sometimes I feel like saying, "Are you having genital problems?" 3) I hate this when it happens to me. Sometimes a person thinks she'll get off at a nearer point than the others so she demands to sit at the entrance of the jeepney. It gets me angry because I usually sit at a new jeepney, one that's not at the front of the queue to fill with passengers so that i could sit at the entrance, you know, first come first serve policy. And then when the jeepney's infront of the queue, and a lot of passengers have boarded, here come's a snotty lady who requests to sit at the entrance because she's getting off sooner. My! If she wants to sit at the entrance she can go at the next jeepney in queue so she can guarantee a seat fairly. Well, I only give way to oldies and handicapped. 2) I'm not really pissed at this. somehow I could understand that they want some space too, because they also feel tight like I do. 7) I think all of them are like this. That's why I sit at the second jeepney in queue, so that it won't have to be me who have to sit half-butt.

It had been years ago that I promised myself not to take the jeepney ever ever again! For these: Our house in Manila is in Vista Verde, very near Sta Lucia Mall.So it is ridiculous to take the taxi going there if the car is not available. My daughter and I,one time took the jeep going to Sta Lu=== the jeepney was half full.As all passengers do,they sit at the rear part no matter how far they are still bound. So,we had to move further inside. Before we make it to the seat...the driver,or crazy driver, would step on the gas and we end up tumbling down. Once seated, the crazed drive will step on the brake so hard when someone gets down, pushing the inertia from rear to front...we are smashed, smashed and mashed like potatoes. When we went down,Im glad I made my daughter step down first, because before my 2nd leg could touch the ground, the driver decided to get crazy again and drove fast!well, this happened to all the passengers on board. My nerves were trembling,my hair stood up like seeing a ghost...not to mention people handing payments to you like you are their slave! So now, when we are in Vista Verde...and our car is not available...I call Sta Lu rent a car...for P120 or $2, a van picks us up from my door to sta Lu's door. Jeep?NEVER AGAIN!

Hahahhaha ok i must admit you did made me laugh. this happens to everyone every single day. hahahaha you're right anyways...i hope that guys can be more sensitive when it comes to riding jeepneys. they should close it up a little bit. no offense to those people who are "big" but if they're big big...then i guess they should pay for 2?? it sucks when jeep is for 9 people then some people are suffering coz they have to fit in that small seat. oh well....just my 2 cents worth
