When I say Hi There or Hey There, I'm just greeting the person in from of me, or as in the case on the internet, the person I'm sending a message to "right there"! Taripre$

Oh, I meant to say the person in front of me! Greetings are just that, greetings! Just formal or informal, why not? It's just the polite thing to do! Taripre$

i would say "there" is equal to "to you where you are" or maybe just hi to you :)
