Too bad that so many young people don't cook

I find it amazing that so many young people these days, don't know how to cook, or are not interested in learning. What a shame that they're missing out on the really good taste of home made meals, and what a ton of money they'll spend on fast foods, and or just resturant food. I taught both my son and my daughter, and my grandson how to cook, and it's saving them a lot of money in this time of needing to know how to cut corners in the family budget. Do your children know how to cook?

I had two boys and absolutely they know how to cook. My thought was to make sure that they were self sufficient, cleaning, cooking, laundry, finances etc. My youngest son is pretty creative. He likes to make food on his Foreman grill including grilled chicken quesadillas!

I'm still the kid, so no, But my moms daughter (me) knows how to cook XD lol Ive been cooking since I was about 9... But Mom and I have seemingly incidentally taught my brother to rely on us for cooking...so he is a lot farther behind, he asks questions about EVERY LITTLE DETAIL Im not kidding...I should probably be more patient with him though... But yeah I'm also dissapointed with how little parents teach their kids to cook these days, I was at a craft club once with my friend Bekah, and we were all doing clay ornaments and stuff, and they were having a problem with the clay sticking to the cookie cutters, and I was like "Just put a dip the cookie cutter in flour, it shouldnt stick." and after a couple hints more hints like that from me and some of the other girls were pretty much in awe of me... like i was so smart at cooking...and its like... YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS! O.o

I don't have any children but I live with my girlfriend who has kids and, no. Almost every day they come home with pizza or theu go out to eat. They have no conept of saving money and today, that is the most important reason why you need to learn how to cook. Plus, it's nice to know that if you're hungary, you can make something for yourself.

Uh oh, I don't enjoy cooking...I only cook when I have to but I do it for myself. I don't like cooking for other people because I don't think it will turn out well. Plus, I don't like chopping up food and having to clean up afterward. Then you have to deal with leftovers. It's just not an enjoyable task for me. I'd rather pay for food than slave over it myself. I do plan to take lessons before I get married though because being a good mom seems to have something to do with being a goddess in the kitchen. :(

I don't have any children but I know how to cook. Nobody taught me before. My sister doesn't like to cook because it makes her untidy and oily. I love to cook because I get to experiment but I can only do that when my mum is away. If she's at my place, she will be the one to cook since she's a much better cook than I am. :) And yeah, home-cooking is always cheaper and healthier.

i like a good home cooked meal but i really can't be bothered to cook myself. i've never seen my parents cook when i was young.. it was only when i grew older that they started to take cooking courses together. Plus, i've always had a maid to cook my meals for me hehehe. However, i like food so i decided to try cooking lessons in school... sad to say they all went pretty much horribly. haha. those classes really put me off cooking. but, i would like to learn it again eventually, in my own time, because eating out is really expensive. plus, i'd like to be able to cook a nice meal every now and then for that special someone ;)

I think it is one of the best things you can do for your child/children ia teaching them how to cook. It is also alot of fun and family time. The talking never stops in my kitchen while cooking with the kids. We have 7 biological children and are raising our one granddaughter and we have and still are teaching them all to cook. It not only provides, bonding and family time, it also teaches self-reliance and healthier eating. Besides it can make you feel good when grown-up kids still call and says, "Mom again how do you make sloppy joe sauce"? LOL

i am still 22 and i definitely know how to cook even when i was just 15. i have noticed though that a lot of the new generation people doesnt know how to cook when i was their age, i already know not only how to fry but really make sweet and sour fish, pork and chicken adobo and other dishes.. I think this is influenced by restaurants and fastfoods! and also instant foods that are available now.. there has been a lot of canned foods and proccessed foods where we can only fry and boom, it's ready to eat! but we are taught, while growing up that these dishes are not healthy, that's why my mom would always cook something healthy instead of just frying some beef loaf or corned beef for us to eat!:)

when i was with my parents i dint care about cooking and stuff. But now i have come abroad to study and i really miss that good home cooked food's taste. I wish i could have learned something at that time. But its too late. I have to always eat from outside. I plan to learn it when i will go to my home country but i think i need alot of time to do that. Because i dont know to cook anything.

Hi I totally agree with you, nowadays people prefer to go out to a restaurant instead of home meal. A couple of days ago, I heard a friend of mine making a comment about this fancy local restaurant, and how delicious the meal was, but when I asked her how much they charged her, I was shocked on the price she payed!!! it was like 3-4 times over the cost and me, being that same restaurant's supplier, I think I should raise my price hahaha Also I think cooking is fun, it's not tedious as most people think, and it's not exclusively a job only for mom... and for dates it's nicer to cook something on my own instead of going out some restaurant... I don't have kids, but I will definitely teach them to cook...

Thats a good point u got there cooking, cooking has come a long was and as u said teaching ur son and grandson its all good but the thing is cooking isent the same as it was 30 or 40 years back now a days times have changed u have more restaurants that supply home made meals as well as junk food which did not exist 30 years back, with increasing number of restaurants and some which provide good food as you make at home, have made the people of this generation not to take any initiative in cookind and if u see 20 years back the pay-scale of a person would have been reasonably lesser than the pay a person is getting today and since u get more money obviously u would put aside more to spend on food and since u have more restaurants and fast food joints comming up today u have more people going out or making a home delivery insted of cooking, if this was the case 20 years back even then no one would have learned how to cook and the peole would be in the same state even then, what i beleive is times change and one should adopt to changes, its like this when people switched from cooking on kerosene and firewoods to LPG at first some did hesitate about the taste and the quality of food. Since using gas they thought wether the food would smell of gas and so on but look at it now no one uses firewood and kerosene anymore everyone uses LPG, in the same way pritty fast the people would adopt to the new way of eating and the new ways of making or getting food.

Hi there classycat, I agree with you totally, my mother taught me how to cook homeade things and i am not really that old i am only turning 30 this year. I cannot believe how many people out there just eat fast food and junk food all the time something that can be put in the microwave :) Oh well I guess they are going to be the ones suffering, because that fast food and junk stuff is going to make them very unhealthy when they do grow up. You can keep the weight off maybe when you are young but when you get older the pounds will stack up on you and then what. You will be crying that you are overweight and cant do anything about it. Boo hoo Melissa

Hello,Classy! The young people, boys and girls, now a days are so busy in their studies and services and other activities for earning money that they don't have time to cook at home for their meals. In the present circumstance the instant foods or ready to eat foods have gained immense popularity. But these people does not realise the bad effects of these fast foods or junk foods. These foods are cooked in unhygienic conditions and used artificial color and flavor and preservatives which can contribute to an array of diseases.they also play a major role in lifestyle disorders like diabetes, blood pressure and obesity. So in my family none is interested for eating these foods.Instead they cook everything they like at home to keep the body and mind in tune.thanx.

My son is only two years old but already I let him help me set up the table or put away dirty dishes in the sink. I cooked since I was 10 years old. I had early experience because of responsibility. During weekends, my parent would left me with my younger siblings and I cooked for them . My mother taught me to do simple dishes, like fried rice and yellow curry. As for the youngsters, I felt that they were too caught up in work that they had to cut down time on cooking. Or maybe some of them had lost interest or had no interest in cooking at all.
