(sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) and you could choose which one He will take away, which sense are you willing to give up? it'd be the sense of touch for me, as i think i can't live without the other four. what about you?

Wow, really? You'd really rather lose the sense of touch rather than any other of your senses? I... don't think I can do that. I can suffer not tasting my favorite foods (which is a big sacrifice for me, glutton that I am), not hearing the world's varying sounds, even not seeing the sights that takes one's breath away, but I would never want to lose the ability to feel. If I had to choose, I'd lose my taste. I can eat even without tasting anything (eating would become a chore - a task I need to do in order to live - rather than the pleasure it is for me right now, but it's still preferable than if I were to lose the other ones), and retaining my sense of smell can still give me a bit of "taste" to the varying food I'll eat. It won't be the same (obviously), but it's something I can live with if I had to make the choice. I chose taste because the other four are just more important, I think. I'd want to hear my mother's heartbeat when I embrace her even if I can't eat her cooking, for example. And smell is directly related to a human's sense of taste AND memory, so it's more important than the previous two (for me). Sight is, obviously, a great deal important. You learn 80% of the things you learn through sight after all, and it just feel's better to SEE someone you love smile than be told someone is smiling. As for touch... I just can't imagine life without feeling it, you know? Seeing someone hug me when I feel bad would ease my worries, I know, but FEELING it would be so much more effective for me because... it just would be (heh, can't explain it well). I guess you can "feel" other people's emotions even without feeling them on your skin, but there are just some things that words (hearing) or pictures (sight) can't convey that I think would be easily understood by touch, so. Yep, TASTE if the sense I'm willing to part with. My order would probably be: TASTE, SOUND, SMELL, SIGHT then TOUCH. I just cannot stress how important touch is for me. :p

very thorough answer and with good reasons, too. well, that just goes to show that people have different takes on the same subject. what works for you might not work for me, and vice versa. thank you so much for the input! i missed having you around!

Haha! Thanks, kaye! I haven't been around almost all of October, so it's kinda taking some time to get used to posting here again. Actually, about last year, my most important sense was sight. Just because having the sense to see enables a lot of things, you know? So obviously, I considered it the most important sense and would like to part with it last (it's the first to go when someone is about to die though /morbid tangent) But then I saw this show (I forgot what show exactly) where the main focus for that episode was about this kid who was born without the ability to feel. And at first, I was thinking, "That's convenient; if you have to lose a sense, better that. No more pain! ^_^" But watching the kid was heartbreaking. Her whole body is filled with bruises and scars and burns and the like because she couldn't feel when something is hurting her, and learn not to do it again. She bumps into things, sharp corners and just continues on, and she doesn't even know that she's bleeding. Her mom was patting her head fondly while the mom was being interviewed, but the kid doesn't even notice until she looked up and saw her mom's hand, and only then did she smile. And I realize that touch is just really really important and doesn't get the notice it deserves (probably because it's uncommon to lose it? That show was the first time I realized people can be born without the ability to feel). I mean, when we were babies, we can't see immediately and couldn't distinguish the sounds we heard, but we respond to our mother's touch innately, don't we? So I decided it'll be the sense I'll consider most important from now on. XD (if you couldn't tell from my prattle, I've asked this question to friends a LONG time ago and babbled about what's important to me, haha. Sorry for the length!)

I would pick hearing I guess. I was going to pick taste, but I like food too much? I would love to not have to listen to my hubby sometimes. If I could just turn him off it would be great! He'd be giving me those sturn looks while he's ranting and raving and I'd just be staring back at him with a puzzled look on my face..."what, I can't hear you...what r u saying...r u upset about something....no really, I can't hear u." Silence would be so golden in those moments!

I don't know if you could call it talking, it's more like nagging inquiries. Stuff like, did you call the insurance company... did you call the lawyer... did you do this... did you do that... why this... why that... what happened here... what happened there... what about this... what about that... blah, blah, blah. It's like an inquisition.

I'd prefer losing my sight if that were the case. I may have used this sense improperly most of the times and I usually have had trouble getting sleep. But before God would ever take this away from me, I would request from Him to give my gift of sight to someone who really needs it (",).

I think I would give up the sense of smell. While sometimes there's nothing finer than catching the scent of something sweet, that's the one sense I think that I could give up without suffering too great a loss. I am a musician, so my sense of hearing is very important to me. I love to drive, so the ability to see is incredibly important as well. I love to hold my children, so the sense of touch is a big deal and I love to eat, so the sense of taste has to stay. I think that smell is the easiest to give up...heck, when you're sick and your sinuses are blocked up, the sense of smell goes away, and how badly do you really miss it? When you are sick, you want your sinuses to clear, but just so you can breathe...the sense of smell is already gone and we hardly even notice.

I never thought about it that way, but my nose stays clogged up from allergies half the year anyway. I can't smell half the time anyway, so what would I really be losing? I suffer from severe seasonal allergies, especially in the Spring. Claratin and Benadryl is the only way I survive I think.

good point. two things that i cannot miss out on if i had to give up my sense of smell is the scent of the early morning breeze and the smell of food. if i'm not able to smell the food that i eat, i lose my appetite, so i might have lost my sense of taste as well. but that's just me. anyways, thanks for the input!

I did a survey like things years ago lol. Well most people, even I, chose to give up smell. But then we considered that taste is so close to smell, and its like giving up both. I think I would give up smell still though... not sure about it though. I think touch is important because of warm and cold and such... oh they are all so important lol. I only wish smell weren't SO related to taste. :(

hubby pointed that out also, that smell and taste are partners, and sight and hearing are partners as well. so that made me choose touch. but good answer, provided your reasons

yeah, pain could be the best thing that i'd get out of taking my sense of touch away. anyways, thanks for responding, too

Oh that's a great point. Thanks for pointing it out, I'm leaning towards touch now. Unfortunately we wouldn't know if something feels good, but we won't have to be in pain, which could be good or bad depending how aware we are. Like if we were bleeding from a cut but couldn't tell.. we'd have sight to help with that

I agree. I think touch would be the easiest thing to live without. I wouldnt like to lose any of course. I think sight would be the hardest thing to lose because you would be constantly in drakness and I think this would be worse than being in a world which is quiet.

Yes that is a good point. A loss of any of the senses would have its disadvantages though. I do not think you could choose any and then not think but...

My first instinct was to say smell. After thinking for a moment if you can't smell then nothing taste right. So I will say taste. It is the only sense that does little to protect you. Smell alerts us of fire, bad food, and other dangers. If you can't feel you are likely to burn yourself or not know when your cutting yourself. Hearing and sight are both must have senses, yet some do live without.

I'm torn between touch and smell, but i guess it would have to be smell. Lots of stuff stinks and you wouldn't have to put up with any stinky smells.

yep. you wouldn't have to put up with it anymore. but on the flip side, there are a lot of things that smell good too oh, my question was really hard, was it?

I would gladly give up the sence of taste. I'm a very very picky eater and would love to expand my variety. This would be perfect for me! So I would not only give it if I had to but also voluntarily. Wonder how i could go about doing that???

I would have to say sight. This is because my son has no sight and he has taught me alot. He has to live life in a new way. Without sight he uses his other senses to the extreme. Like our rabbits, we feel that they are soft, he feels that they are super soft. We take so much for granted when we have sight. There are better adaptations for the other senses being missing. So I would choose sight.

oh. i'm sorry about your son. but you have made a very valid point there, that with the ability to see, we tend to be less aware of the other things that the other four senses make us feel, taste, smell and hear

i could do without the sense of sight on condition that there would be others to read me books i need, possibly i could live without smell, i would use my extensive imagination, well, sometimes it's even better not to smell something which is smelly;D ; without taste every food would be bland, no great pleasure, without touch it would be difficult to convey emotions, without hearing i wouldn't listen to music which is my real passion

If God had to take away one of my senses then I would give up smell. I cannot really smell anything the way I used to. I do not think it would be as bad as sight, touch, hearing or taste. Taste might be a second choice as it would be nice to eat everthing available and not worry about the taste.

i was worried that i might not be able to savor the delicious food that i enjoy, but now that you pointed it out, i guess losing our sense of taste has an advantage too. i can eat the vegetables that i don't like without having to worry that they taste badly. nice answer!

i think i will go for smell. i have a cold right now and it is a heavy one..... so i can not smell anything at this moment. that i think i can live without if God took my sense of smell. the rest are not easy if i lose it. my mom's left eye can no longer see, she only have one eye but still it was very difficult for her. what more if she lose both eye sight. so i go for smell.

nope nope. i think all of the mare connected here . if you loose one .. you really become impaired and thats like vbery bad right? Well anyways i do hope that nothing like this ever happens to me or anyone else ever in this world but since you have asked me this ques. i guess i would go with sense too. If and if only giving this option that , one has to be gone and all then only i would allow my sense to be gone. Well i relaly want the other 4. lol. Well anyways nice discussion buddy and happy mylotting to you :)
