I work in the Electronics Dept for a major retailer. A previous poster has a great point. The best camera for you really depends on what you are using it for. Look at megapixels although I do agree that you can create "noise" with too many. Anything over 6 mp's will allow you to develop great pics all the way up to 11 x 14's. You probably don't need anything more than that. If you're going to be taking pictures indoors or in low light (dawn or sunset) you'll want to look at the ISO rating. You'll probably want something with a rating of 1600 or higher if you do a lot of shooting in that environment. Look for a camera that has some sort of anti blur technology. Sony calls their steady shot. I would also look for a camera that uses a lithium ion rechargeable battery. Cameras suck the life out of double A's and if you do opt for a camera that uses double A's, consider an additional purchase of rechargeable double A's and a charger. Sony and Canon both make excellent cameras. However, my personal favorite right now is the Olympus 850. It is shock resistant up to 6 feet so if you drop it, the camera can withstand the drop. Another great feature is that it is waterproof to a depth of 10 feet. I think that it also has a tremendous anti blur technology. Here's my last piece of advice to you. For the best price on a camera, check out the open box items. These are items that have been purchased and returned within 30 days of purchase. If the returns are defective, the cameras are sent back to the manufacturer. If not, the camera cannot be sold as new and is offered at a discounted price. Honestly, with cameras, televisions and all things electronic, open box is what store employees buy. We first look for a camera that we like and then wait for a return. Check the stores return policy if you go this route. It's typically 30 days and make sure that you check out the camera within that time frame.

All good advice, except for the low light suggestion. With respect, very few Non-SLR cameras give acceptable results shooting above 400ISO. The exceptions are quite expensive, although the newest Canon SX1 IS, which is the only compact so far to have a CMOS sensor, might do the job.

You have to determine how are you going to use the camera. Will you use it for personal photos only? Or are you a professional digital photo enthusiast? Answering these questions do help a lot in your buying decision because you want to buy a camera whose features suit your needs, right? You might want to check this http://www.squidoo.com/howtobuyadigitalcamera for more tips on how to buy your "best buy digital camera".

Don't worry about megapixels: more pixels don't make better photos, and too many degrade the image by increasing noise, especially in low light conditions (see my article at www.quazen.com/shopping/consumer-electronics/too-Many-Pixels-for-a-good-image.326677 for more info). Look for a camera that has a viewfinder (not just a screen) and feels right in your hands. A viewing screen that tilts out is really handy, and 5x or longer optical zoom is a plus, while digital zoom is a watse of time. There are really no bbig advantages in one brand over another: they all have their good and bad points, so make sure you actually try some out before you decide.
