Canned Fruits

Fruits are so expensive and the only fruits that I buy are apples and that's when they are on sale. Is it totally unhealthy to eat canned fruits. When I do buy them I try to get the fruit in fruit juice and not the syrup. What brand of fruit would you recommend? I need to eat more fruits and veggies but can't afford the fruits as much as I can a few veggies.

We eat some canned fruit too. It isn't the healthiest choice. But it is still a healthy choice. I don't buy from a particular brand. But we also buy some frozen fruits.

I have bought frozen fruits a few times as well but have only used them in deserts and smoothies. What kind of frozen fruits do you buy and how do you prepare them?

Fruit is a healthy choice, any way you take it. Canned, frozen, fresh. Fresh is the best. But, its all healthy. We buy more frozen than anything. But, when we do buy canned, we get it in juice or water, never HEAVY SYRUP.

This is what a physician told me several years ago (I wanted to confirm by going to a plant to see the packaging process, but they refused to allow me a tour of the facility) I was told that I wouldn't eat 90% of the fruit that was used for the cans of fruit sold in the stores. Much of the fruit is bruised, found on the ground, picked to early, too late, rotting, etc. Very little of the fruit has commercial value in the food stores because of appearance. To a lesser extent, the same is sometimes true with the cut up slices of fruits that many grocery stores sell in clear plastic containers. These containers are total rip-offs and you'd be wiser to buy whole fruit instead. The fruit they use is older fruit that has been on the shelves for a few days and has been passed by because of bruises, and appearance. We stopped buying these containers when we often found the watermelons to be almost taste-less and sometimes mealy. The same goes with the melons... they are often melons that were picked way too early and we found them to be w/o taste too. If you are looking to fruit and veggies, try to buy organic fruit (or atleast try to buy from a fruit/veggie market if there is one in your area) Organic fruits are full of taste and flavor because they aren't grown in chemically enhanced soil, not sprayed with pesticides, etc. There is no way I can ever eat another non-organic apple again. After tasting organic apples and finding them full of flavor (just like they tasted when I was a child)there's no going back. I have found that many times, the cost of organics can be similar in price to the non-organic fruit.

I think that, if you want the most nutrition value for your money, the fresh approach is better. Try to buy what's in season, as they are the most economical. Stay young and healthy, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and greens!
