IS HYPNOSIS REAL?

The Hypnotist...Real or Fake - What are your ideas on the subject? Have you tried it? Do you fear it?

Do you believe in hypnonsis, or is it just a scam? Practioners of hypnosis tout that it can cure illness, stop addictions, and change behaviors. But can it really?Have you ever been hypnotized? Did it work for the purposes you initially tried it for?

well i've seen hypnosis, but not as a healing but more of entertainment. to my knowledge of hypnosis. no one can ever make you do something you wouldn't already do. it is mind over matter. using hypnosis to cure a medical disiese may be impossible and a scam, i believe things like phobias, to quit smoking or eating less can work on some people. hynosis doesn't work on all. your mind has to be a certian way. you can block someone from hypnotizing you.

Thanks D. That is a really great suggestion; to make sure that the session is recorded in some fashion. I will take that into account when I go, or if I go. LOL. I really appreciate your input on this subject. It has been very helpful and informative.

actually in 2-10% of people Hypnosis can talk a person into doing things they did not want to do. I know I experimented with this. To see if that was real or not.... It is if the person knows how to manipulate a person just right... This is why you make sure the Hypnotist you go to has been trained and certified in ethics, Knows how to use the words the right way, is committed to helping and not hurting. The People who can be pushed are usually those who have no understanding of right or wrong in certain values.....or are not as strong in a certain action or opinion... Either way it is very important to make sure that whoever you allow to hypnosis you has, good ethics, has been through real training in the type of hypnosis you seek, and that the place who has certified them, has good standards and ethics... And Be very clear and set up before hand of the therapy and if you feel still nervous, ask if your hypnosis session can be recorded, or transcripted. - DNatureofDTrain

I have heard people who got rid of their smoking after going through hypnotism sessions and hyper-active kids who calm down after their parents send them for hypnotism sessions. I am very curious to try if it would help me with weight loss. But maybe not now. When more people have tried it and more success rates proven, I probably might.

I think I am with you there. I want to see some statistical data on sucess rates related to weight loss and quitting smoking. Maybe then I could see myself trying it. It might now work for me though, since I am not a trusting person, and one has to trust that it will work. You can't be the least bit skeptical, or it will not work. Thanks for the reply.

Very good answer. I still don't know, part of me believes it is real, part of me doesn't. I do believe in the "free will" part and that we can make our minds believe certain things, but I believe it is more of an inner strength thing.

When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture the mysterious hypnotist figure popularized in movies, comic books and television. This ominous, goateed man waves a pocket watch back and forth, guiding his subject into a semi-sleep, zombie-like state. Once hypnotized, the subject is compelled to obey, no matter how strange or immoral the request. Muttering "Yes, master," the subject does the hypnotist's evil bidding. This popular representation bears little resemblance to actual hypnotism, of course. In fact, modern understanding of hypnosis contradicts this conception on several key points. Subjects in a hypnotic trance are not slaves to their "masters" -- they have absolute free will. And they're not really in a semi-sleep state -- they're actually hyperattentive. Our understanding of hypnosis has advanced a great deal in the past century, but the phenomenon is still a mystery of sorts. In this article, we'll look at some popular theories of hypnosis and explore the various ways hypnotists put their art to work.

I think so too. I started the discussion in regard to being hypnotised to lose weight or quit smoking. I do find the subject very mind stimulating. Thanks for the response.

I think it is real if you go to a doctor and they do it. I don't believe when people on stage make it look like they did it right then and there.

I've learnt hypnosis - not the stage hypnosis, which apparently is slightly different, but the general hypnosis. I hypnotised my friend one night and it was really weird - I helped her with her anxiety (and made her have a numb arm just to try it out!)

I think hypnosis does exist, but it's not as powerful as the movies and novels say. and if you dont believe it, it cant affect you at all.

I do believe in hypnosis. I have seen it happen to close friends who dont remember anything. Just as I have seen people sleep walk, I believe hypnosis is very similar and is very real. However, I do believe it can be a scam in some extreme cases but it does work.

Hypnosis would probably be something to be afraid of, if it were real. Who knows what someone could get you to do or say when you were out of your head. Watch the TV guide channel and you will see people who are supposedly under 'hypnosis'. Afterwards you can tell it's very unreal.

Many people do have a very real fear of hypnotism. It is a form of control, someone else controling your mind, thus your actions. I believe it is a valid fear and concern.

you're getting very sleepy... - hypnosis
I think that like many other things, some hypnosis is very real and some is hype. I have heard that it can be incredibly effective in controlling bad habits, which is tempting to me because I would sooooo love to lose some weight. I've also heard, but never witnessed, how people can be convinced to do some pretty silly things in hypnotist shows.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I too would like to quit smoking and lose weight. It would be wonderful if it really worked, but I am so unsure because of all the "silly" exhibits I've seen and heard of. Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.

You are skeptical too I see! I still don't know. I know it is mind over matter, but I am still unresolved about whether certain "issues" can be fixed with hynotism. Thank you for replying. I appreciate it.

I think so... as I have seen proofs of so many people getting hypotised and there are also some way of mental and mental related issues that can be cured by hypnotizing the sufferer

What proof have you seen? Do you know anyone that has been hynotized personally? Of course it is a mental process. That is the whole point. I don't know however if they can cure all mental problems.
